That’s a wrap on All Women on Screen!

A huge thanks to all of the panelists, filmmakers, contributors, and the amazing audiences who made it down to our events over the past week. It was incredible to bring these events to life and share them with you all as part of Sparks 25.

And a final thank you to our key partner, Reclaim the Agenda, who work diligently to uplift our community across International Women’s Day and year round.

A Kind Of Sisterhood
Tuesday 10th March, 7pm
Omniplex Kennedy Centre, Belfast

This screening will feature a Q&A with filmmakers Michele Devlin & Claire Hackett, and participants from the film, Liz Maskey, Eileen Morgan and Rosie McCorley.

During the Troubles in the north of Ireland many thousands were imprisoned during the period of internment in the 1970s and throughout the conflict. What is not as widely known is that women were also interned and imprisoned in Armagh Gaol until its closure in 1986, 40 years ago this March, after which they were transferred to Maghaberry prison. Republican women protested to assert their political status and some took part in hunger strikes.

For the opening night of our mini-festival, All Women on Screen, we are incredibly excited to be hosting filmmaker and activist Elspeth Vischer, as we present her film, We Were Always Here.

We Were Always Here is a documentary that tells the story of q***r spaces past and present in Belfast and beyond. Through LGBTQIA+ women and non-binary people who have carved out this vital space, we learn of q***r history and how these ‘places of Pride’ continue to flourish in new ways. This film was made with the LGBTQIA+ Heritage Project NI Project and HERe NI.

The screening will be followed by a Q&A with Elspeth Vischer, as well as a live performance from iconic local band, Strange New Places.

If you haven’t already heard their legendary tunes, Strange New Places are a Belfast-based q***r-punk band of right-on radicals with low self-esteem; a band where q***rness and neurodivergence intersect, and intersect hard.

Come along to celebrate the resilience and power of q***r voices, at The Black Box from 7pm.

This event is part of Safe & Sound, a project that has been proudly supported by Belfast City Council and funded through Ending Violence Against Women & Girls fund.

We curated this evening because the world right now makes it impossible not to.

Two animated short films — Searching Heleny by Esther Vital () & Bestia by Hugo Covarrubias () — will bring to screen the experience of women caught inside political violence.

After the screening, we will sit down with a panel of filmmakers, activists and academics to ask the questions that don’t get asked enough. How are women’s experience in wars & conflicts represented? What gets told, what gets buried, and who gets to decide?

If you’ve also been looking for a space to explore these questions, come join us, this Friday, 3.30PM, at MAC Belfast. Ticket links in bio.
