20 – 26 June 2003

The ninth Bite the Mango Film Festival took a look at the value of music in cinema with a World scores strand from Rick Famuyiwa’s latest release Brown Sugar to Indian actress Juhi Chawla’s musical love story Jhankar Beats. As well as the best new talent, Bite the Mango took an exclusive look at the work of legendary Hindi filmmaker V.Shantaram. This was a rare opportunity to see Shantaram’s work and appreciate at his best. Rare s screened as part of the retrospective were Navrang, Do Aankhen Baarah Haath, Dr Kotnis Ki Amar Kahani and Jhank Jhanak Payal Baje. The Oscar-nominated but much under-rated Hollywood actor got a long overdue retrospective, as did Indian music composer A.R Rahman.
No film festival celebrating world cinema would be complete without the inclusion of Bollywood – the Indian film industry – and this year Bite the Mango made no exception by inviting one of Indian cinema’s favourite son – superstar and Mr India, Anil Kapoor. As well as a mini retrospective of his career, Kapoor ended the festival in style by talking about his career on stage with Dr Rachel Dwyer.
With an eclectic mix of the latest previews and premieres from Hong Kong, USA, India, GB, South Korea, Belgium, Palestine, France and Japan, Bite the Mango this year lived up to its billing as the leading festival of its kind celebrating the best of cinema from the around the globe.
