White Wall Cinema

White Wall Cinema A Brighton pop up cinema community. Much of today's film culture is centred around mass release hype movies like The Avengers, or 50 Shades of Grey.

It is our mission to screen a variety of alternative, fun, interesting, unusual, cult, and all time classic films in intimate locations around Brighton. We want to bring an alternative option where people can enjoy cinema that won't grace the screens of your local multiplex. We want to provide a place not only for new exciting cinema, but lost & undiscovered gems of the past, alongside cult favour

ites & definitive cinematic classics that whilst widely known about, still seem to remain unseen by the vast majority of the people we speak to and are rarely seen on a big screen. All of this in a fun informal friendly "pop up" environment where discussion and a deeper understanding of these movies can occur pre and post screenings.

Coming to WWC June 16th - One of cinema’s most beloved filmmakers, Richard Linklater, the director of Dazed and Confused, Before Sunrise, Before Sunset, Before Midnight, School of Rock and Boyhood, returns with his latest and perhaps most deeply affecting work yet.

Elegantly crafted and richly atmospheric, the film stars Linklaters's longtime collaborator Ethan Hawke (alongside Margaret Qualley, Bobby Cannavale, & Andrew Scott) in what may be the finest performance of his career: a moving portrait of Lorenz Hart one half of the greatest songwriting duos of all time being left by his partner who will then form an even greater songwriting duo without him.

Set on the opening night of Oklahama (the first of his soon to be ex-partner's new triumphs with his new collaborator Oscar Hammerstein) the film beautifully explores love and loneliness in an achingly funny, deeply humane and heartbreakingly sad way.

It's a gorgeously made piece that we adore and can't wait to show you. Get tickets now for Blue Moon screening 8.20pm on Tuesday, June 16th.

This Wednesday 8.30pm (June 3rd) our story begins when Oliver (Archie Madekwe – Midsommar, Saltburn), a pop musician on the verge of stardom, visits a popular Los Angeles clothing store and bonds over shared musical taste with retail worker Matthew (Théodore Pellerin – On Becoming a God in Central Florida, Beau Is Afraid).

Invited to a live show, Matthew seizes the opportunity to enter Oliver’s inner circle. But as Oliver’s fame accelerates and his entourage expands, featuring Havana Rose Liu (Bottoms), Zack Fox (Abbott Elementary), Daniel Zolghadri (Y2K), and Sunny Suljic (mid90s), Matthew must prove himself as more than just another admirer.

As relationships strain and tensions mount, Matthew’s fixation deepens in parallel with Oliver’s rising profile, and proximity becomes a matter of life and death.

TONIGHT at WWC - Robert Duvall’s only Oscar winning role is screened in tribute to late great himself.

Accepting his Oscar from Sly & Dolly, he speaks of the endorsement of country music stars like Johhny Cash (present), Willie Nelson (who offered to promote the film) and Waylon Jennings. Dolly Parton offers an enthusiastic endorsement in person!

A beautifully understated and authentic performance about a former country music star and recovering alcoholic Tender Mercies is a touching and hopeful film that is the finest performance of one of Hollywood's all-time greats.

Come see it tonight at 8.30.

P.S. before sunset and the film, the beer garden is open from 7.40pm for a few sunny pre-drinks!

This Wednesday - in tribute to Robert Duvall, we are screening his only Oscar winning role. The gorgeous Tender Mercies.

**NOTE** Beer garden open from 7.40pm to enjoy a drink outside and then screening starts just before sunset at 8.30pm.

The film's story is so compelling that it was, in essence, revisited in reverse with Crazy Heart, starring Jeff Bridges (who won an Oscar for his role, Duvall himself also appeared in the film). Where the 2009 film charts a descent into alcoholism, this earlier 1983 made tale offers a path toward redemption. Mac Sledge, a once-prominent country singer with a troubled past, awakens after a night of heavy drinking on the floor of a roadside motel and resolves to change his life.

What unfolds is a gentle, reflective portrait of a man attempting to rebuild himself, forming a bond with a young widow and her son, reconnecting with his estranged daughter, and confronting the lingering echoes of his former fame.

Duvall’s deft, deeply felt performance transforms what could have been an overly sentimental narrative into a nuanced character study with lasting emotional resonance. The film’s authentic, richly drawn characters and natural chemistry of the cast, combined with a subtle touch of romance and a quietly inspirational, bittersweet tone, elevate this elegantly simple work.

Powered by a superb, Oscar-winning screenplay, it remains an impressive testament to the strength of restrained storytelling and one of the finest achievements of Duvall’s remarkable career surpassing his performances in the likes of To Kill A Mockingbird, The Godfather, Network, Apocalypse Now and more.

THE performance that made Janis Joplin's career screens as part of our Monterey Pop outdoor 60s festival event showing at WWC on Friday, June 12th.

This specific moment took her from an unknown singer fronting the little-known San Fran rock band Big Brother and the Holding Company to becoming one of the icons of the era.

See this performance (with Mama Cass visibly wowed) alongside Hendrix, The Who, The Mamas & The Papas, Simon & Garfunkel, The Byrds, Ravi Shankar and so many more outdoors in our garden all captured by one of cinema's foremost documentarians D.A. Pennebaker (responsible for iconic docs such as Bob Dylan's Don't Look Back, Stephen Sondheim's Original Cast Album: Company, and David Bowie's Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars).

Don't miss this iconic pre-Woodstock film about the event that ushered in the Summer of Love. Friday, June 12th, under the stars in our garden. Tix via the link in our bio.

This Thursday, the film that influenced Challengers. Yes, that's right, the film that provided all of the ace serves later used in Luca Guadagnino’s ménage à trois tennis drama (starring Zendaya, Mike Faist, and Josh O'Connor)...

Join us for the woefully underseen lost 80s gem Heartbreakers this Thursday following two highly competitive friends (a painter and a women's sports salesmen) who both fall in love with a beguiling art gallery manager. Watch them get bounced around by the women in their life as much as they bounce the ball around on the racquetball court (yes, this is the 80s version).

Funny, mature, sexy and FINALLY restored for the big screen this is a must see for fans of Challengers, intelligent relationship dramas and those with a love of top tier 80s aesthetics, with visuals provided by Scorsese's cinematographer and a soundtrack from electronic legends Tangerine Dream.

A forgotten gem of the 80s this Thursday as the newly restored and criminally underseen 'Heartbreakers' screens at White Wall.

Clearly, the inspiration for the film Challengers, Heartbreakers plays out like a European art-house relationship drama but with all the trappings of the American 80s L.A. aesthetic.

Two men in love with the same woman, unlucky-in-love and being bounced around by all the other powerful and determined women in their lives, their delicate bromance begins to falter.

Cheeky, funny, sexy, yet mature and insightful, this one has been forgotten for way too long. Come see Heartbreakers this Thursday. Tix via the link in our bio.

NEXT WEEK Based on the personal experiences of director Bobby Roth, Heartbreakers approaches its subject in the style of a European relationship drama while retaining all the textures of mid-’80s Los Angeles.

Richly photographed by Michael Ballhaus, a longtime collaborator of Rainer Werner Fassbinder and Martin Scorsese, and scored by pioneering electronic group Tangerine Dream (Sorcerer; Thief; Risky Business) it's captures the quintessential essence of the era's style.

Join us Thursday May 21st for this lost 80s mini masterpiece unavailable since the VHS era about a painter and his best friend who fall for the same woman and then get bounced around a trio of powerful women who send their delicate romance into a spin. Clearly the influence for Luca Guadigno's Challengers. It's another hidden gem uncovered for the White Wall Cinema screen.

🎤 SPECIAL GUEST ANNOUNCEMENT 🪲 - join us for a special screening of the 1964 Beatles classic A Hard Day’s Night, followed by a Q&A with acclaimed journalist, broadcaster, and author Samira Ahmed, whose BFI Film Classics book explores the film’s enduring legacy and cultural impact at White Wall Cinema on Thursday June 25th.

Samira Ahmed is the host of the BBC’s flagship arts programme Front Row on Radio 4, where she interviews leading film directors, actors, writers, and creators from across the cultural world. She also presents Newswatch on the BBC News Channel. In 2020, she was named Audio Presenter of the Year by the Broadcasting Press Guild.

A lifelong Beatles fan In 2021, she interviewed Paul McCartney live on stage at London’s Royal Festival Hall. Then, in 2023, she made international headlines after uncovering the earliest complete recording of a Beatles concert in the UK, a 1963 performance at Stowe School, helping secure its acquisition by the British Library for the nation.

Alongside the screening and Q&A, there will also be an opportunity to purchase copies of Samira’s fascinating book on the film and have them personally signed.

Not only a cornerstone of Beatles mythology, but also one of the most influential musical films ever made A Hard Day's Night is widely credited with helping invent the modern music video (for which he would receive the first MTV Vanguard award at the inaugural MTV Video Music Awards in 1984) Named one of the 100 greatest films of all time by Time Magazine, the film also received two Academy Award nominations.

Shot in a vibrant faux-documentary style inspired by the French New Wave, The Beatles’ wit, irreverent Liverpudlian humour, and extraordinary musical charisma are on full display throughout. Filmed only weeks after the Beatles’ legendary appearance on The Ed Sullivan Show, A Hard Day’s Night captures the group at the precise moment they transformed from pop sensation into global phenomenon.
