Ashes Of Time Chinese Film Festival Focusing on the culture of different groups in contemporary China

The Ashes Of Time Chinese Film Festival is back with a new collaboration with Fragments Festival in the Genesis Cinema to screen the award-winning feature "Hidden Letters".

Nushu is an ancient Chinese language exclusively used by women, spanning past and present. The documentary follows two millennial Chinese women, connected by their fascination with the secret language of sisterhood and their desire to protect it. They will continuously explore and forge their own paths in life and spirituality within patriarchy culture.

During recent years in the UK, the emergence and rise of Chinese are-house films have been prominent due to various reasons. However, the popularity of Chinese films in the UK does not necessarily reflect better accessibility. Although film distributors, educational institutions and organisations have established networks to support and encourage viewership, there are still many challenges that they have to face.

We held an industry panel during the festival featuring Professor Chris Berry, Dr Xiaoning Lu & Millie Zhou as they attempted to uncover an understanding of Chinese films through the creative processes, economic networks and audience reception. They also shared views and opinions on the future of Chinese film distribution in the UK.

Huge thanks to everyone that attended the panel on the 8th of July at 4pm! There were some really interesting discussions and questions raised!

Professor Chris Berry is a Professor of Film Studies at King’s College London. His academic research is grounded in work on Sinitic-language cinemas.

Dr Xiaochun Zhang is a Lecturer in Translation Studies at University College London. Her research areas include the translation and distribution of Chinese cinema, film accessibility, and fan translations.

Dr Xiaoning Lu is Reader in Modern Chinese Culture and Language at SOAS, University of London, where she teaches Chinese-language cinemas and culture. Her research has been preoccupied with understanding modern China's complex relationship between cultural production and state governance.

Millie Zhou specialises in Asian cinema and is a London-based film curator and entrepreneur. She co-founded Plus One Films where she started the exhibition initiative: Chinese Cinema Project in the UK, showcasing quality independent Chinese language films from emerging and underrepresented filmmakers.
