OUR STORY

Since our inaugural screening of Woody Allen’s ‘Love and Death’ on the 20th September 1979 when we operated as a Film Society, Chichester Cinema at New Park has blossomed into a nationally acclaimed and locally loved independent cinema. We screen the very best in film from around the world; we host an annual film festival and screen live performance events too.

Journey into the bold, bizarre world of 1960s pulp pop cinema!

To mark the publication of 'The look of the 1960s: Barbarella and the Pulp Pop Comics', co-author Professor Hugo Frey presents a lively illustrated talk exploring the moment avant-garde comics collided with international cinema.

From the pop-art explosion of Roy Lichtenstein to Jean-Claude Forest’s Barbarella, the era gave rise to a wave of cult films and stylish curiosities.

We will also be presenting rare screenings of Modesty Blaise (Saturday 30 May) and two special 35mm screenings of Barbarella (Monday 1 June and Friday 5 June).

Step into the dazzling psychedelic universe of 'Barbarella' exactly as audiences experienced it in 1968 - projected from a rare original IB Technicolor dye-transfer 35mm print, on loan from The Cinema Museum.

This is real film, with the rich saturated colours, deep blacks, flicker and texture - that analog magic that made classic cinema unforgettable. A true cult sci-fi landmark starring Jane Fonda at her most iconic, 'Barbarella' was made for the big screen, and screenings like this are becoming increasingly rare.

Don’t miss the chance to experience one of cinema’s most visually outrageous adventures in the format it was created for - genuine theatrical film projection.

This intimate comedy drama about art, commerce and the mess in-between, follows the children of a once-renowned artist who secretly hire a forger to finish his long-abandoned canvases - hoping to secure their inheritance before he dies.

Starring Ian McKellen and Michaela Coel, this beautifully acted film is both sharply funny and incredibly touching, a story about legacy, family, and the value we place on art.

We’re looking for local people who can help bring cinema to life - whether by giving a talk, leading a school session, or helping run events. No formal experience is required, just enthusiasm and a love of film!

“Film of the Year to date. A Cornish modern classic. Eerie, heart-breaking, wonderful’” – Mark Kermode

Mark Jenkin (‘Bait’) brings us his latest unique drama, and its already being tipped as film of the year...

Three decades ago, the Rose of Nevada vanished at sea, along with its crew. Now, it has returned. Shooting on a 16mm Bolex camera, Jenkin writes, directs, edits and scores a haunting and hallucinatory time-travel mystery that further solidifies him as one of the most distinct, singular artists working in film today. Not to be missed!

Join John Harte and Mike Jennings from our Education Team for a fascinating look at the life and work of Werner Herzog. One of cinema’s true giants, Herzog has made unforgettable films including Fitzcarraldo, The Enigma of Kaspar Hauser (screening Tue 19 May, 18:15), and Cave of Forgotten Dreams.

From impossible dreams to human endurance, his films explore obsession, risk, and the extraordinary lengths people go to in pursuit of their goals. The talk will include extracts from both his feature films and documentaries, and will be followed by a Q&A.

We’re raising funds to support our Film Club - and the young people who’ve made it their own.

Once a month, 15–25 year-olds gather to share pizza, watch a film together, and talk about what they’ve just seen. It sounds simple. It isn’t. For many of our members, walking into a room of strangers is genuinely hard. Social anxiety, neurodivergence, the lingering isolation of the pandemic years: these shape how young people experience the world, and how they connect with each other.

What’s happened at Film Club has already been quietly remarkable. Friendships have formed and confidence has grown. Young people who arrived on their own leave with people to hang out with or simply message afterwards.

We want to grow what’s working. As Chichester’s only independently run cinema, we’re free to try things like this. Next on our wishlist is the launch of a Youth Programmers’ Group, where members will get hands-on experience choosing films, marketing screenings, and learning projection: the kind of real-world skills that can open up future career opportunities.

We keep tickets at £3.50 so no one is priced out. Your support will help us cover the true cost of running screenings and invest in this growing community.

If you believe cinema can do this, and more, please consider a donation.
