Rex Cinema Elland

Cinema The Rex, Elland is one of the oldest purpose built, structurally unaltered cinemas in the country. The manager and pianist was Harry Taylor.

It was built in 1912 and opened as the Picture House on 12 December that year. It was operated by Central Pictures (Elland) Ltd which was formed of local businessmen. Within a few years the company had taken over the Town Hall (later the Palladium) cinema in town, which had been showing films since 1909. The two cinemas were managed by James Montgomery. The Central closed in January 1959 due to co

mpetition from television and the frequent bus service to cinemas in nearby Halifax and Huddersfield. The Palladium followed suit in June the same year. Walker Cinemas of Huddersfield then acquired the Central, carried out a refurbishment (including the installation of Cinemascope) and re-opened it as the Rex in November 1959. Bingo intruded on a couple of evenings in 1964 and took over completely later in the year. Proprietorship changed a couple of times and a further trial of films occurred between November 1975 and August 1977, after which bingo resumed. The enterprise folded sometime in 1985. In 1988 the Rex was taken over by Charles Morris and Peter Berry, extensively refurbished and opened on 7 October. It has since built up a reputation of a well run, comfortable but traditional cinema showing a wide range of films. It has a mailing list with addresses as far apart as Leeds and Manchester and attracts a large, regular and loyal following, with ticket prices among the lowest in the country.

For instance we have added SHAUN THE SHEEP: THE BEAST OF MOSSY BOTTOM for matinees this weekend at 2.30. We think the new website is easier and you have the option to join the mailing list to receive details of our programmes.

THE DEATH OF ROBIN HOOD (15) shows from tomorrow (Friday) until Thursday 10th at 7.45 except Saturday when it's at 4.50. Hugh Jackman stars as Robin Hood in a dark adaptation of the 17th century ballad Robin Hood's Death, filmed in Northern Ireland. Also starring Jodie Comer and Bill Skarsgaard.

COYOTE vs ACME is our weekend matinee attraction on Saturday and Sunday at 2.20. This comedy combines live action with some well-known cartoon characters including Road Runner.

& SONS, a family drama starring Bill Nighy and Imelda Staunton, is on Saturday at 7.45, Sunday at 5.00 and Thursday morning, 10th, at 10.30am. the estranged sons of a reclusive novelist are called to meet him after he becomes convinced hi is about to die.

We are participating in National Cinema Weekend, with all tickets at £4 on Saturday and Sunday.

Comedy is in the offing with PRACTICAL MAGIC 2 which starts on Friday 11th Sept. Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman reprise their roles.

THE INVITE returns tomorrow (Monday) for four nights at 7.45 plus Thursday morning at 10.30am. We originally showed this comedy drama at the beginning of the scorching hot weather so we thought we would give you a second chance to see it. Joe and Angela's marriage is on thin ice.
