Electric Palace Hastings The Electric Palace is an independent bijou cinema in the heart of Hastings Old Town. We also put on live comedy, music and theatre events. Visit us soon!

This specially developed cinema aims to bring to Hastings a wide choice of films and film related events, with regular screenings of Contemporary, Classic and World Cinema. We have a licenced bar and offer a tempting ran

ge of refreshments such as Green & Blacks Chocolates, organic wine, local beers including Hastings Brewery ales, miniature bottles of Prosecco, and alcoholic ginger beer. We rely on a team of volunteers to staff the screenings and on your ongoing support to maintain a diverse and exciting programme. The Electric Palace is open to everyone. You are welcome to book tickets in advance through this website or simply turn up before the screenings. Doors open 45 minutes before each performance. 🩸In 1897 Oscar Méténier invented the Grand-Guignol. Live depictions of death, bloody melodramas, screams of the victims and the audience: here is the story of this Parisian theatre of horrors that revolutionized the depiction of death in art. In a back alley in the seedy Pigalle district of Paris, a former chapel became a theatrical institution forged in naturalism, controversy and grisly spectacle.

Over the next 65 years, it would actively provoke revulsion, celebration and begrudging global esteem.

More than a half century after its final performance, the Grand Guignol remains one of the most wildly misunderstood and profoundly influential traditions in entertainment history.

From horror films to tabloid journalism, avant-garde theatre to the true-crime genre, France’s ‘Theatre of Death’ is still slicing, gouging and spurting its pervasive way through culture both high and low

🎹 Following our super-sold-out screening of IT'S NICE UP NORTH at the beginning of the year, we're very happy to announce that the genius that is GRAHAM FELLOWS is returning to the Electric Palace. We will be showing the film plus a Martin Parr short, followed by a Q&A with Graham.

📸 The 20th anniversary tour is being presented as a tribute to the late Martin Parr, the celebrated photographer who shot the movie, and whose distinctive eye is central to the movie’s charm and enduring appeal.

🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿 It’s Nice Up North follows the legendary comic character John Shuttleworth - on a gently absurd journey through the Shetland Islands to test the theory that the further north you go, the nicer people become.

B Movie Fan Club takes place on the last Sunday night of every month, hosted by Robin Knowles. It's an enjoyable romp into classic low-budget, horror and sci-fi films. Free space candy included with every ticket. The club has been running for more than 13 years.

⚽ Play keepy-uppy with that football feeling at the Electric Palace at our 1966: The Year England Won the World Cup. August 8-9.

🏆 We may not have won the trophy this year, but let's look back to our most legendary of Men's World Cup victories and relive that optimistic, sunny high!

🚀 To celebrate 60 years since England's victory over Germany, we are showing two of the biggest films of 1966 and the documentary that traces our team's path to triumph.

⛰ The Sound of Music was a huge hit and was still playing in cinemas in 1966 during the World Cup victory! This will be a special singalong version, so pull on your nun or curtain costumes.

🦇We're also screening a 60s classic - the high-camp, all-star Batman: The Movie - as well as FIFA's beautiful, shot-on-film Goal! - the official cinematic documentary of that climactic World Cup.

📽 Electric Palace facts! Did you know that the Electric Palace's beautiful building was, at one point, the Hastings Mechanics' Institution? These 19th-century educational establishments were created to provide adult education in technical and scientific subjects to working men; a wholesome alternative to pubs.

🔭The Hastings Institution was founded in 1834 by John Banks, who lectured on scientific subjects from chemistry to astronomy. “Without the least pretension to eloquence or finished rhetoric, he stands before his audience a plain-speaking man, thoroughly understanding his subject and telling his hearers in plain Saxon what he knows”.
