Film Voting Choice No4. A Room with a View (1986)
No background story to this film. I just love it. Great cast, great characters and beautiful scenery both in Italy and in England. Lucy Honeychurch shares a brief romance with George Emerson in Florence. Yet as she tries to move on with her life and look for marriage elsewhere, can she truly forget the events of that summer? The film stars a whole host of well-known actors; Helena Bonham-Carter, Maggie Smith, Judy Dench, Denholm Elliot, Julian Sands, Daniel Day Lewis, Simon Callow, Rupert Graves, Rosemary Leach. Film Voting Choice No3. Pretty in Pink (1986)
I discovered this film when I was living in Spain teaching English as a foreign language. Every Friday, the teachers in the school got together in one of our flats, ate Spanish food and drank cheap Spanish wine (oh, we loved wine in cartons, probably rough as anything but in your early twenties, who cares?) and this was one video we watched that the others all knew and I didn't. I loved it. It was between this one and another film, but Julian said this as he also loves it. A poor girl must choose between the affections of dating her childhood sweetheart or a rich but sensitive pl***oy. See the trailer here:

Film Voting Chioce No2. Close Encounters of the Third Kind (1977)
This sci-fi drama was written and directed by Steven Spielberg and stars Richard Drefuss. I was 11 when this came out and seeing it on the big screen at that age left a big impression and I still love it - so does Julian. Star Wars was out at a similar time and also left a big impression - Julian and I can watch the original trilogy again and again (no idea how many times we've seen them) and I would love to have put that on the list but it's a no go. But Close Encounters just whet my desire to want to see a UFO! An Indiana electric lineman finds his quiet and ordinary daily life turned upside down after a close encounter with a UFO, spurring him to an obsessed cross-country quest for answers as a momentous event approaches.
