Hailed as “The cosiest cinema in Leeds” upon opening the Picture House has been in constant operation since 1914. The programme features a rich mixture of traditional arthouse films, key cross over titles and a varied array of special events delivered in collaboration with a strong selection of partner organisations including Leeds International Film Festival, Leeds Young Film Festival and the University of Leeds.

Our puppet season begins tomorrow! In anticipation, Martha has written about the beloved puppet creator Jim Henson, who has inspired generations with his creative genius. He started out with the first iteration of the iconic Kermit the Frog, using his mum's old coat and a ping-pong ball, and went on to become a massive success, working on The Muppets, Sesame Street, The Dark Crystal and more.

But throughout all of this, what Martha really appreciated learning about was how he seemed to remain as kind as his caring characters, taking the time to send thoughtful replies to fans, for example.

There are so many reasons to come see Effi o Blaenau with us from Friday...

🌟 It's the only Welsh language film being released this year. We'd love to see more Welsh language films & hope the more people who come see this, the more likely that might become.
🌟 Like The Odyssey, it's another great opportunity to delve into Greek mythology, as it's based on Gary Owen's much-lauded play, Iphigenia in Splott, which explores the Greek legend of Iphigenia.
🌟 Unlike The Odyssey, it had a small budget, so is very much worth supporting to make extraordinary filmmaking feel more viable to other small filmmakers & encourage distributors to back films which are small in budget, but not in impact.
🌟 Despite having roots in mythology, it feels incredibly real and relevant, tackling social issues of today, showing a grittier side to Wales rather than its spectacular mountains.
🌟The performances, particularly of Effi, played by Leisa Gwenllian, are phenomenal.
