is that... another screening i see?

as a part of the bfi’s nationwide “rip it up” season, our next screening is a beloved british favourite, Bend It Like Beckham, directed by Gurinder Chadha starring Parminder Nagra and Keira Knightley.

“rip it up,” which is the 2026 bfi fan uk-wide event, explores and celebrates the changing face of youth rebellion, culture and expression, from joy to heartbreak, on screen in the uk. and we, of course, chose Bend It Like Beckham.

“Who wants to cook aloo gobi when you can bend a ball like Beckham?”

Jess Bhamra, the daughter of a strict Indian couple in London, is not permitted to play organized soccer, even though she is 18. She dreams of playing professional football, but her parents have plans for her: a law degree and a marriage. When Jess is playing for fun one day, her impressive skills are seen by Jules Paxton, who then convinces Jess to play for her semi-pro team. Jess uses elaborate excuses to hide her matches from her family while also dealing with her romantic feelings for her coach, Joe.

also included in our screening is a wonderful ability to do a Q&A with some of the members of Lewes FC Women 🩷

presented by the kino collective, 'Q***r As Punk' (2025) (Directed by Yihwen Chen) is coming to the depot as our first screening ⭐️

being lgbtq+ is criminalised in muslim-majority malaysia. a documentary portrait of courageous people, humorous friendship and the spirit of punk ♡♡

Faris is a transman and lead singer of 'Shh. Diam!', an openly q***r punk band in Malaysia. Together with his bandmates Yon and Yoyo, they use their music to fight for LGBTQI+ rights in a country where human rights and freedom of expression is severely curtailed by a conservative Muslim society. Faced with increasing discrimination, Yoyo decides to leave Malaysia. Despite the challenges, Faris chooses to stay, determined to continue using their music as a platform for advocating for freedom and equality, refusing to let the pressures of society silence their voice.
