‘Ocean With David Attenborough’, as with the rest of his catalogue of documentaries, is an easy, relaxing watch, but it’s also an interesting film that transports us to the deep sea, with stunning visuals and mind blowing facts.

Shortly after the release of ‘Ocean’, Attenborough shared that he truly believed that this film “could play a decisive role in saving biodiversity and protecting the planet from climate change”. One of the films directors praised Attenborough saying “every time you work with David, you learn something new”.

We can’t wait to watch this documentary in our community ran cinema, celebrating the life and career of an amazing man who is still, at the age of 100, working to protect our natural world.

Get your tickets for Friday 22nd May, doors open 6.45, film starts 7.30 with a well-stocked bar open throughout.

In 2020, Prince William and Sir David Attenborough teamed up to launch The Earthshot Prize; an annual award for ‘contributions towards environmentalism’. The five prize categories are ‘Protect and Restore Nature’, ‘Clean Our Air’, ‘Revive Our Oceans’, ‘Build a Waste-Free World’ and ‘Fix Our Climate’.
Prince William established The Earthshot Prize, because of the ‘tipping point’ that our worlds climate was at. He was inspired by the works of Attenborough, as well as his own father and grandfather.

Each winner is given a grant of £1 million to help them continue their work. It is planned that the Earthshot Prize will continue to be handed out until 2030. The winners are chosen by a council that both Attenborough and Prince William are apart of alongside a range of people including Cate Blanchett, and chef José Andrés.

As Sir David Attenborough approaches his 100th birthday, we wanted to take a look back at where his long and successful career began.

When he was 10 years old, he and his brother attended a lecture with Canadian conservationist Grey Owl, Attenborough was said to be “bowled over” by his message. He would eventually win a scholarship to study geology and zoology at Claire College in Cambridge, where he got a degree in natural sciences.

He soon began working on Natural History programmes, producing and presenting ‘Animal Patterns’, a three-part show featuring and discussing animals from London Zoo where he met the Zoo's curator Jack Lester; who he would go on to make ‘Zoo Quest’ with.

In 1965, Attenborough became the controller of BBC Two, where he quickly helped capture the attention of the public; and in 1965, he was promoted to Director of Programmes, a post that he held until 1973, when he left to return to full time programme-making, writing and presenting, beginning the career that we now know.

Here at New Dot Cinema, we try to show as many different genres and styles as possible, and when we realised that National Treasure, Sir David Attenborough was going to turn 100 on May 8th, we couldn’t resist the opportunity to show our first documentary. We think that 'Ocean With David Attenborough' is the perfect film to honour the career of Sir David and his huge impact on people's understanding of the natural world 🌎

‘The Choral’ was received warmly, with a lot of praise going to the performances, especially Ralph Fiennes’ (who also happens to be our first repeat actor in a New Dot film showing!). It holds a 67% on Rotten Tomatoes, and The Guardian’s Peter Bradshaw calls the film “a wintry, comic acknowledgment of mortality”.
