Heresy Review: Dutch Folk Horror That Chooses the Bear

Horror fans, we need to talk about the witch movie renaissance. Hope Madden’s latest review asks the question that’s been haunting the genre since Robert Eggers first sent a family into the New England wilderness: what if choosing the old faith over the new one is the only sane option?

This time, the setting is a medieval Dutch village, and the woman at the centre is Frieda, whose “failure” to conceive marks her as a problem the village men think they can solve. Director Didier Konings, better known for his concept art on blockbusters like Wonder Woman and Stranger Things, brings an eye for the uncanny to his feature debut. Anneke Sluiters does something remarkable with barely any dialogue—you watch her go from hunted to something else entirely, and the transformation is worth the price of admission.

She’s back in her creepy hometown near the Forest of Dean, fresh from a bad relationship, and she finds a body. A body crawling with ants. Things… escalate.
