Belén, feminist drama feature is one of this year’s most acclaimed Argentinian films and Argentina’s entry for the Oscars, opens in the UK and Ireland cinemas on 7 November. 🎞️

Belén
Dir. Dolores Fonzi 🇦🇷 2025

💚 Belén is based on the true story that sparked an international movement, chronicling the harrowing case of Julieta, a young woman falsely accused of infanticide after having an spontaneous abortion, and Soledad Deza, the fearless lawyer who takes on the highly controversial, explosive case.

‘While the film makes an unavoidable political statement – justified, as the Belen case kick-started a movement which ended in the legalisation of abortion in Argentina in 2020 – it never becomes a mere polemic. It is ultimately a heartfelt, inspiring story about ordinary people who choose to stand up and make a change – and a reminder that, for so many women, the fight goes on.‘ Nikki Baughan for Screendaily

Catch Belén on the big screen in selected cinemas in London and beyond from November 7

Legendary Isabel “La coca” Sarli, was a beloved Argentinian actress, star, and model, known for her participation in s*xploitation films directed by Armando Bó. She was born in Entre Ríos in 1929 and died in 2019 at the age of 89. Sarli defied initial criticism and censorship to build a successful career in an adverse context and became Argentina’s most important erotic icon and a referent in Latin America.

Why is it that when a woman crosses paths with Evil, she always ends up a le***an, a pervert, and flashing her body at every opportunity? 🍎

Cinema Mentiré and Category H join for the first time ❤️‍🔥 to bring a voracious and l***y Latin American double bill at the Rio Cinema: ✝️ nunsploitation Satánico Pandemonium + 😈 s*xploitation Embrujada

📅 Saturday 7, November, 9 pm📍Rio Cinema

Satánico Pandemonium - The Sexorcist
(Gilberto Martínez Solares, 1975 🇲🇽)

From Bride of Christ to Slave of Satan! A legendary piece of nunsploitation cinema follows Sister María, a devoted bride of Christ, whose chance encounter with Satan unleashes a spiral of lust, blasphemy, and blood.

The film shows scenes that were surprising and scandalous at the time, especially the numerous n**e scenes featuring Cecilia Pezet and her attempts to r**e and stab people. In terms of camera use and narrative strategies, Martínez Solares approaches directing as a craft, like an artisan. The staging, the excellent use of locations, stands out - the elements of the landscape have their own weight in creating the atmosphere that gives the story its dramatic intention. It was shot in the spring of 1973 in the convents of Tepoztlán, Morelos, and Morelia, Michoacán, in Mexico, locations that lend to its authenticity.

👹 The night continues with Embrujada (Armando Bó, 1976 🇦🇷) at 11 pm.
Costumes are encouraged – come dressed to sin.

ELEMENTAL WORLD CINEMA BOOK LAUNCH & SCREENING

To mark the publication of Elemental World Cinema: Cinematic Entanglements of Earth, Fire, Water and Air (Brill), Cinema Mentiré invites you to a free entry screening of contemporary Latin American short films exploring the four classical elements. An edited collection, Elemental World Cinema is the first book-length study to examine the relationship between cinema and the elemental. Rejecting the abstract and overused concept of ‘nature’, the volume centres instead on earth, fire, water and air to offer more concrete and specific perspectives on the intersection of film and the nonhuman in a time of climate emergency.

We are thrilled to announce our next screening! Seventy-one years after its release in 1954, Cinema Mentiré and Cinemateca Brasileira present the first Brazilian noir film, Road to Crime (Na senda do crime), at the 8th Budapest Classics Film Marathon, organised by the National Film Institute of Hungary, taking place from 16 to 21 September in Budapest.

ROAD TO CRIME / NA SENDA DO CRIME
Dir. Flamínio Bollini Cerri 🇧🇷 1954

📅 Friday, 19 September, 8.45pm 📍Art+ Cinema Lugosi Hall
📅 Sunday, 21 September, 3.00pm 📍Urania Fábri Hall

Sergio works as a mere employee at his rich uncle’s bank, leading a wasteful life in nightclubs and dating the sophisticated starlet Margot. Greedy and unhappy with this situation, he joins a trio of burglars to rob wealthy homes, later becoming the gang’s leader.

Road to Crime is presented alongside world classics in the strand Light and Shadow – The Noir and the City.

The print to be shown was specially digitised by Cinemateca Brasileira and Sociedade Amigos da Cinemateca for Cinema Mentiré’s season How to Dispose of a Dead Body: A Taste of Latin American Noir, held in September 2024 in London. It was the first time this extraordinary film was screened outside Brazil in decades.

Cinema Mentiré will be in the Hungarian capital to introduce the screenings thanks to the support of Instituto Guimarães Rosa and the Embassy of Brazil in Budapest. We are also grateful to André Sirangelo, our partner in all noir film adventures.
