Moloch the Corruptor!

One of Buffy's early villains, kind of the Buffyverse's answer to Ultron πŸ˜„

One of the more technically detailed models, but fun to make.

Dracula's Cane!

Complete and ready for display, I've learned a lot making this, couldn't have done it without the help of some very talented individuals too.

The only thing left to make is a wall plaque to hang it, which will be done soon.

Wood/ Completing the Cane!

The wood used in the real cane was Purple Heart, a native Brazilian species. I sourced a nice piece which was then sent to renowned woodturner Richard Findley, he did a spectacular job adhering to the strict specifications to the millimeter.

Oil finished and buffed to a satin sheen, the cane could then be assembled after adding the threaded rod into the wood ( it was a nightmare to get it level and straight so the cane head would sit correctly by the way)

Silver plating/casting

The head was now ready for silver plating, a delicate process for which I have zero skills in πŸ˜† so I contacted Mellows Metal Finishing, expert platers who have worked on lots of films and even the 2012 Olympic Torches!

The work was superb, I made sure to ask for a thick plating considering it may get heavy use, who knows maybe a cosplay in the future πŸ«£πŸ˜‰

To make it look closer to the original it was then oxidised with silver sulpher solution and polished back so only the recess areas are darkened, a natural process for silver just sped up a few years early lol.

The tip of the cane was cast from a modified replica I sourced and weathered by The Folklore Foundry in solid Silver.

Brass finishing

This was by far the most challenging part of the project, and took me about 60 hours to do it. The casting was good, but needed a lot of refining to get it as good as the resin master.

My dremel didn't last long πŸ˜„ so a new one was needed, as well as lots of different Carbide carving tools and diamond files to slowly chip away and reveal the finished product, altogether the weight was reduced by 83 grams, about 10% of its overall mass.

A 6mm hole was drilled and tapped to receive a threaded rod for connecting the Head and Wooden body and making a strong connection.

This was my first time working with brass for carving, and thank goodness Brass is a soft metal because if this was Steel it probably wouldn't have worked with the tools I have πŸ˜…

The next stage was cleaning and polishing with brasso and Autosol polishing paste and buffing wheels, as it's imperative the cast is clean for Silver plating.

Resin/Brass casting

The first step was to distinguish between the Factory X replica and the actual prop. Whilst the differences were subtle, they were important to getting 100% accuracy.

Luckily I found courtesy of Mooncrest models a resin replica head of the Factory X version, which I then spent a week modifying to suit my design. This included splitting the neck and re-adjusting the head position, adding sections with miliput putty, and removing certain sections too, plus adding holes and extra 'flame' sections that are missing on the official replica.

Once this was done, I learned the original Prop was made from Silver Plated Brass, so I contacted the very helpful Madeley Brass Castings to sand cast the resin model. Sand casting was chosen rather than silicone moulding purely to save cost, that process produces very accurate results but at 4 times the price! I was confident I could finish the piece by hand and with power tools.

Bram Stoker's Dracula, Dir. Frances Ford Coppola 1992.

Starring Gary Oldman as the titular character of Count Dracula, iconic to say the least, however my personal favourite scenes feature Gary as the younger 'Prince Vlad' which inspired this new project that has now been a year in the making!

The Dragon Cane was something I always wanted to own, but after seeing the only official replica from Factory X I wanted to do this prop justice, so I spotted in a Dracula Group Robert O'Connor's Crimson room, a shrine to the film with the most impressive lineup of actual props ever! 🀩

When I saw that he actually made a replica cast from the ORIGINAL PROP I got to talking about making one for myself, and his help was invaluable to bringing this project to life.

*Images below are either film shots or the actual cane used, not my replica. That comes later on πŸ˜‰
