(218)

The films chosen for the original opening performance were "TRUST THE NAVY" starring Lupino Lane and "CRAIG'S WIFE" starring Rosalind Russell as well as a coloured rhapsody plus the Gaumont Bristish News. The cinema was described as a modern, up to date and luxurious building situated in a prominent position near to the Guildhall in the centre of the town. The auditorium was of spacious design seating 600 people in total in the circle and stalls areas. Now the cinema, which re-opened in 1993, is operational in the former circle section of the building and has still retained the art deco architecture and can accommodate 130 people. The auditorium has been completely re-seated with more comfortable and luxurious seats and the original decorative neon lighting has been restored to the frontage of the theatre. The Lounge section is situated in the original stalls area and has been refurbished with comfortable chairs and tables and a maple dance floor installed in front of the cinema stage. A fully licensed bar is now available in the Lounge. A popular attraction in this area has been the monthly classic cinema presentations. Visit this unique attractive art deco cinema and enjoy the best in film entertainment in comfort and pleasant surroundings. There is a large car park nearby with no evening charges and seats are bookable for all performances. In 2013, the Empire Cinema converted to Digital - now promising the very best in Modern Digital Cinema and Dolby Digital Sound.

🎥 Verity (2026) – Some Deceptions Leave Scars Forever

Verity brings a chilling psychological drama to the screen, wrapped in fog, silence, and emotional tension. Led by Anne Hathaway, Dakota Johnson, and Josh Hartnett, the story pulls viewers into a world where love, ambition, grief, and deception twist together like shadows inside a locked room.

At the heart of the film is a writer drawn into the life of a famous author whose past refuses to stay buried. Pages are found. Secrets begin to breathe. What first feels like a professional opportunity slowly becomes a terrifying descent into obsession, manipulation, and moral doubt. 📖

The atmosphere is cold and elegant. Mist-covered forests. Still water. A lonely house filled with unfinished thoughts. Every glance carries suspicion, and every silence feels written with fear. Anne Hathaway brings mystery and emotional control, Dakota Johnson adds vulnerability and quiet tension, while Josh Hartnett grounds the story with a haunted presence.

What makes Verity so compelling is its darkness. It does not rush the fear. It lets uncertainty grow slowly until the audience begins questioning every character, every memory, and every confession. This is the kind of thriller that stays in your mind long after the final scene. 🕯️

⭐ Early Rating: 8.6/10 – A haunting psychological thriller filled with secrets, obsession, and elegant suspense.

AN ADVERT FOR THE ORIGINAL SILENT EMPIRE CINEMA IN 1913

We've been creating resources from our collection that can be easily handled and shared without causing any damage to the originals. Some of our favourites so far are from our newspaper collection, such as this page from the Sandwich Advertiser, dated 1913. It's interesting to see the names of the businesses, their owners, and of course, where in the town they were based.
