Whitstable Supper Club

Whitstable Supper Club BRINGING PEOPLE TOGETHER THROUGH FOOD
A weekly event where members of the community cook their favorite food and others come and eat it. The space is ours.

We are starting up a weekly Supper Club at the Whitstable Umbrella Community Centre. The idea is that members of the community can cook their favorite food in the well equipped kitchens and dining faciities, invite their friends, make new friends and taste new flavours. Once together we can also show films, tell stories, share music. Each week a different cook, a different theme, a different flav

our, different people. The first night on Thurday February 14th will be cooked by Sidonio. He will provide a Mozambican supper.Doors open at 19h30

After that the kitchen is free each Thursday for anyone who would like to have a bigger kitchen and dining room to cook for their friends and other people from the community. Sidonio is happy to fill the gaps if the diary doesn't fill up straight away, so from now on, put it in your diaries, Thursdays is supper club night. We hope to quite quickly build up a group of people interested in helping to keep the Supper Club as a true community resource. We'll create a Supper Club page on the Umbrella Centre website and spread the word in all the usual ways possible through social media. To start with please spread the word among your friends and e-mail lists. The supper club is conceived as a community resource, not for profit, however as a starting rate, to make sure the costs are covered tickets will cost £10 per person (half price for children). As the ingredients have to be purchased in advance and we have yet to create a bank account for on-line ticket-sales, to begin with tickets can be purchased from The Whitstable Umbrella Community Centre Office (open Monday - Friday between 10 and 5). The theme for the first evening on Thursday 14th Feb is Love and Friendship. Don't feel shy to come alone, There will be love and friendship for all. Bring your own bottle (for a small corkage fee) or drink house wine or beer. We have 52 Thursdays a week to fill, so if you are interested in cooking get in touch with Sidonio or Karen. Sidonio 07519 244794 ([email protected])
Karen 07515 348532 ([email protected])

We look forward to hearing from you and seeing you on Feb 14th. with Love and Friendship
from
Sidonio and Karen

Hi Supper Clubbers

Amanda, Elaine, Penny will be doing a Halloween special Supper Club this Thursday, 31st October at 7h30. We’re planning a starter of Thai Pumpkin Soup followed by a traditional South African dish from my home town, Cape Town, called Bobotie and rice. This is a minced based dish and is very aromatic with garam masala, cumin, allspice chutney etc. I will also do a vegetarian option using . The dessert is Penny’s apple bakewell, Halloween style.

Tickets are on sale at Herbaceous.

We look forward to seeing you all.
Do feel free to come dressed for the occasion.

St Mary's Hall Whitstable 7.30pm - 11.00pm
Tickets £20 (includes Mozambican food from Sidonio)

The evening is particularly special, not only because we have Celso Paco from Mozambique to play for us, but because the situation in Mozambique has just become alarmingly tense. Following a series of escalating incidents over the past few weeks, and two days ago, the spokesperson for the opposition party in Mozambique declared the end of the 21 year old peace accord - the same Peace that we have been celebrating in Whitstable every October every year since we arrived in 2007.

This dinner dance now marks the beginning of our efforts to play our small part in ensuring the rising tensions in the country do not devastate the lives of another generation of children.

Sidonio and I will be in Mozambique in December/Jan and would like to personally take a donation from the people of Whitstable to the Chamisava Children's Centre, a rural children's cultural centre we have close connections with in Catembe, a small town like Whitstable, on the coast not far from the Capital. Chamisava Children's centre uses arts and culture to bring children (orphans and children with struggling parents) together. The civil war was fierce in this area and tensions still run high between the two sides. Giving the children and parents opportunities to be together whichever side they are on is now more important than ever. We will spend time at the centre and will use any money we raise to provide them with whatever they see as their most immediate needs. We will report back on how your money was spent when we return.

So, let's celebrate the love and warmth of Mozambique and see if we can make a difference at the same time.

If you are unable to come but would like to make a donation please get in touch. We will soon be announcing a way this can also be done on line.

See you there
Karen & Sidonio

This week Supper Club on Thursday October 10th is a celebration of the beginning of the Supper Club one year ago when Sidonio cooked for 150 people to celebrate 20 years of Peace in Mozambique. There will be a celebratory feast of Goat Curry and Pilao rice (typical of Mozambican parties) with some mbira music from Nelson Neves after the meal.

The full menu is:

Starter: Caldo Verde (a portuguese soup made from greens with portuguese chorico sausage (without for the veggies).

To link with the Supper Club celebration there will be an exhibition of the work of internationally acclaimed Mozambican artist Magule Wango at the Fish Slab Gallery on Oxford St. The gallery will remain open until the start of Supper Club, so head out a bit early and check out the Mozambican art and start to feel the Mozambican heat and magic before savouring it's flavours.
