As part of the “Ambassadors’ Talk” series organized by the Institutional Role Group of ACEO, we had the pleasure of visiting the Ambassador of Australia, Alison Duncan, at the Ambassador’s Residence for a discussion entitled “Doing Business with Australia: the World's 12th Largest Economy and Gateway to the Indo-Pacific.”
During the event, the prospects for strengthening trade and investment relations between Greece and Australia were discussed, with particular emphasis placed on the opportunities expected to arise from the Australia–EU Free Trade Agreement following its approval by the European Parliament. The need for deliberate strategic choices aimed at diversifying trade was also highlighted, in an international environment increasingly shaped by geostrategic competition, supply chain risks, and the growing use of trade and investment measures as instruments of influence.
At the same time, attention was drawn to the factors that make Australia a highly attractive business destination, including its AAA credit rating, highly skilled workforce, transparent legal framework, ease of doing business, and privileged access to the five billion consumers of the Indo-Pacific region. Particular reference was also made to the investment opportunities that Greece could leverage, given that Australia ranks among the world’s top five countries in asset management, with approximately USD 5 trillion in assets under management.
The discussion that followed confirmed the strong interest in the opportunities emerging within an ever-evolving international environment.
