Part two of our appreciation post
THE BRIDE! is my kind of big swing storytelling.
An exploration of contemporary feminism that’s wild, violent, sensual and a big musical (?) gothic-punk-rock experience with immaculate character design that has the energy of a mad scientist. It actually feels like watching a bunch of genres mixed into one. Very much in the spirit of building your own creature and I think it’s awesome!
A female director reimagining Frankenstein as a crime romance with Christian Bale and Jessie Buckley? Magie Gyllenhaal fearlessly poured her creative ideas and expressions into the film’s style and structures. I appreciate her for that.
Two ferocious and fearless lead performances from Jessie Buckley and Christian Bale going absolutely unhinged together is the kind of creative chaos we all need.
Films like THE BRIDE! should be cherished as a brave creative swing, it’s what the studios and audience (claimed) wanted, and not cast aside because of its rebellious ambition.
The film is scored by none other than Oscar and multi-award winning composer, Hildur Gudnadottir whose skills are well suited to the genre. But we decided to put the classic Monster Mash, ironically the actual end credit song, for this post.
Here comes THE BRIDE! Now go see it on IMAX!
