Carrick Film Society Movie art house, world, independent film every Thursday(except summer months) at Carrick Cineplex

Carrick Film Society is back! In association with Eclipse Cinemas we’re delighted to return with a special screening of Horseshoe. Winner of Best Film at the Galway Film Fleadh 2025 Horseshoe is a richly layered drama-comedy with a sharp emotional edge. Co-directed by Adam O’Keefe and Edwin Mullane, the film follows the Canavan siblings as they return to their crumbling family home after the death of their estranged father.

As long-buried secrets begin to surface, old rivalries reignite and tensions build in a story that balances dark humour with emotional depth. Featuring haunting music from John Francis Flynn, this film is intimate, sharply observed and stands out as a confident and compelling piece of contemporary Irish cinema. We are especially excited to welcome the film’s director, Edwin Mullane for a live Q&A on the night.

After a long wait and many enquiries, we’re delighted to announce that Carrick Film Society is back!
We’re returning with a shorter than usual season, but we’re excited to share that a full Autumn programme is on the way.
Keep your eyes on our social media for updates, screening details, and more news over the coming weeks. It’s good to be back!

Our opening film is Horseshoe and we are delighted to welcome director Edwin Mullane for a Q&A after the screening.
Horseshoe, co-directed with Adam O’Keeffe, is a beautifully observed Irish comedy-drama full of warmth, wit and emotional depth. Set against striking west of Ireland landscapes, the film blends sharp humour with heartfelt performances to create a story that feels both intimate and universal. Winner of Best Irish First Feature at the Galway Film Fleadh, it marks an impressive debut for two exciting new voices in Irish cinema.
Don’t miss this brilliant opening to our season, Thursday, April 16. All welcome!

Don’t miss this weeks film “Paradise Is Burning” — directed by Mika Gustafson — a raw-edged, haunting coming-of-age drama that stays with you long after the credits roll. It follows three sisters left to fend for themselves when their mother disappears, capturing the dangerous freedom and fragile solidarity of childhood in crisis. The film has already earned high praise and major awards — including Best Film at the 59th Guldbagge Awards and the Sutherland Award for Best First Feature at the BFI London Film Festival.
If you’re ready for a film that’s unforgiving but deeply human — a film that shows sisterhood, survival and youthful angst under the scorching weight of reality — this one is powerful beyond words.

Thursday, 8:30, Carrick Cineplex. All welcome!

Don’t miss our next film, 8:30, Thursday Carrick Cineplex.

On Falling, directed by Laura Carreira, is a quietly devastating portrait of isolation and exploitation — centering on Aurora, a Portuguese warehouse worker trapped in the relentless grind of modern capitalism. The film has already earned Carreira the Silver Shell for Best Director at San Sebastián and the Sutherland Award for Best First Feature at the BFI London Film Festival. With a 96% score on Rotten Tomatoes, it’s been praised as a “chilling exposé disguised as social-realist drama.” A very impressive debut.

This Thursday’s film, Holy Cow, directed by Louise Courvoisier, is a quietly powerful coming-of-age drama set in rural Jura, France — a warm, unsentimental ode to cheesemaking, responsibility, and resilience. After his father’s death, 18-year-old Totone (Clément Faveau) must care for his sister and turn to a Comté cheese contest to save their farm. Courvoisier’s debut shines with natural performances (many from non-professionals) and an earthy realism that never feels romanticised. “sentimental in the best of ways, with its warmth and hope in human nature.” (Guardian). The film has won a César Awards for Best First Film and Best Female Revelation. Its gentle humour, grounded storytelling, and authentic rural setting make Holy Cow a deeply human and uplifting cinematic gem.

Next up, Good One, directed by India Donaldson, this subtle, intimate drama captures a three-day camping trip that becomes far more than a nature outing. It traces 17-year-old Sam’s quietly powerful awakening as she navigates the growing emotional rifts between her father and his best friend. The film’s strength lies in its naturalistic performances, beautifully calibrated visuals, and the way Donaldson resists easy catharsis — instead letting small gestures and unspoken tensions accumulate into something quietly devastating. It won the Grand Jury Prize for Best Narrative Feature at the Independent Film Festival Boston. “This excellent film … is a smart, sympathetic and terrifically acted drama…an outstanding performance from Lily Collias.” (Guardian). Overall, Good One establishes India Donaldson as a filmmaker of rare subtlety and emotional acuity. Don’t miss it next Thursday, Nov 13, 8:30, . All welcome!

This Thursday, 8:30, Carrick Cineplex…..
Emmanuel Courcol’s The Marching Band is a tender and elegantly composed French drama that finds warmth and resonance in themes of brotherhood, class, and the unifying power of music. When a celebrated conductor learns he is adopted and seeks out his half-brother, a trombonist in a factory marching band, Courcol crafts a story that balances sentiment with sincerity. The performances are understated yet deeply affecting, grounding the film’s emotional sweep in authenticity. “a good-natured heartwarmer with some syrup, but also two watchable and robust lead performances.” The film’s musical interludes are beautifully staged, offering moments of both exuberance and quiet reflection. Winner of the Audience Award at the 2024 San Sebastián Film Festival and nominated for multiple César Awards, The Marching Band stands as a graceful, humanistic work that celebrates the redemptive harmony between art and life.
