| In a groundbreaking moment for Indian cinema, Boong, a Manipuri language debut feature directed by Lakshmipriya Devi and backed by Farhan Akhtar, has won the Best Children’s & Family Film award at the BAFTA Awards 2026. This marks India’s first win at the ceremony this year, placing regional storytelling from the Northeast firmly in the global spotlight.
The film triumphed in a competitive category, surpassing internationally acclaimed titles to secure the honour. Its victory signals growing international recognition for regional Indian cinema and highlights the unique voices emerging from Manipur.
At the heart of Boong is the emotional journey of a young boy, portrayed by Gugun Kipgen, who sets out to reunite his fractured family amid the social and political tensions of Manipur. His quest takes him to the border town of Moreh and across into Myanmar, accompanied by his friend Raju (played by Angom Sanamatum). Bala Hijam stars as his mother, Mandakini.
Producer Farhan Akhtar, attending the ceremony with Shibani Dandekar, spoke about his long association with Lakshmipriya Devi, saying he had known her for nearly two decades and felt compelled to support a story from a region rarely represented on the big screen. Calling it “heartwarming,” he said backing the project felt right.
The award was received at London’s Royal Festival Hall by Lakshmipriya Devi and producer Ritesh Sidhwani, alongside members of the team. In her acceptance speech, Devi expressed gratitude and reflected on the journey of the film: “To walk up till here felt like the last few steps to reach a summit of a mountain we never knew we were climbing in the first place.” She also spoke emotionally about the unrest in Manipur, praying for peace and for displaced children to regain their joy and innocence.
Before its theatrical release in September 2025, Boong premiered in the Discovery section at the Toronto International Film Festival 2024, and later screened at the Warsaw International Film Festival, MAMI Mumbai Film Festival, and the Indian Film Festival of Melbourne, earning praise for its emotional depth.
With this BAFTA win, Boong not only secures a place in the highlights of BAFTA 2026 but also establishes Manipuri cinema as a powerful voice on the global stage.
