Recently at 1Shanthiroad, we showed 'Unfolding Intersections,' a Sound Sculpture by Maximilian Glass.

Unfolding Intersections is based on a recycled metal structure that functions simultaneously as instrument, resonator, and spatial interface. Activated through a composition of shifting frequencies, the sculpture is set into varying states of vibration, revealing the resonant properties of the material in relation to the acoustic character of the surrounding space. Sound travels through the metal, into the room, and back again, forming a continuously responsive system. The room behaves like an expanded loudspeaker — one that visitors can enter, move through, and listen from within.

Maximilian Glass is a Berlin-based sound artist and composer-performer working at the intersection of installation, sculpture, and experimental music. His practice explores the relationships between sound, space, and movement through electroacoustic systems, feedback structures, and kinetic sound objects. Using loudspeakers, microphones, motors, and everyday materials, he creates installations and performances where sound emerges from physical processes and spatial interaction.

We are delighted to share some of the work, our Australian artist-in-residence, Mary Barton, produced during her month at 1Shanthiroad. Her residency culminated in the exhibition, Theatres for Feelings.

"These pieces have become theatres of emotion, homes for my feelings. They are personal, layered with paper mache, drawings and personal notes hidden under the layers, plastic bottle tops, tragic love letters, photo copies of loved ones, a broken heart quartz.
Things I have collected or have been given to me, which I have carried with me for sometime. Interwoven with found discarded materials off the street here in Bangalore."

We will miss her, and wish her the best luck and success with all her future endeavours!

We welcome you to Unfolding Intersections by Maximilian Glass at 1Shanthiroad Studio/Gallery from 1st May - 3rd May.
There will be a performance by the artist on Saturday, 2nd May from 7:00-8:30 pm.

Rather than presenting sound within a space, the work makes the space itself audible.

Bangalore, often referred to as the “Garden City” of India, has a fascinating story to tell through its diverse array of trees and plants.

Long before rapid urban growth transformed the city, its landscape was home to native species that had adapted to the region’s climate.

Trees like neem, peepal, and banyan not only provided shade and resilience but also played a central role in community life. Many of them are still found around neighbourhood temples and shrines, showing how deeply nature is woven into the city’s traditions and everyday life.

The introduction of exotic plants began centuries ago and gathered pace during the time of Hyder Ali, Tipu Sultan, and later under British rule.

Lalbagh Botanical Garden, founded in the 18th century, became a place where plants from all over the world were brought, studied, and grown — from African baobabs to South American jacarandas.

Under colonial supervision, both Lalbagh and Cubbon Park became spaces to showcase foreign species.

Over time, many of these plants, such as tabebuia, rain trees, and eucalyptus, have become integral to Bangalore’s identity.

Today, the city’s greenery is a vibrant mix of native and exotic plants, each telling a part of Bangalore’s story. This blend makes the city beautiful, but it also raises important questions: How do these plants impact local biodiversity? What role should they play in a rapidly growing urban landscape? And how can we plan for a greener, more sustainable future? This discussion invites you to explore these questions and consider how the plants around us shape not only our environment, but also our sense of place and belonging in the “Garden City.”
