LIGHTING: WHAT IS HARD LIGHT AND SOFT LIGHT

Hard light is a direct predominant light that produces harsh shadows and results in a high level of contrast. Hard light can be obtained from having a light source (unshaded) pointed directly at the subject. The most natural hard light you can find is the blistering sun on a sunny day. It is advised to not to shoot when the sun is highest if a scrim or some sort of diffuser is not available, because a midday sun can create such harsh shadows which is unpleasing. Hard lights are also extremely effective as a rim light (backlight).

Hard light is set at quite a distance from the subject because counterintuitively a hard light becomes softer as it is brought closer to the subject. When positioned further away it becomes more of a point source which creates the harsh shadows.
