History of Iconic Basusree Cinéma..

Established on 19th December 1947, for those who have not caught up with the show, Basusree Cinéma marked the journey to become one of the most famous heritage cinémas screening films for the last seven decades. Built in a classic Mid-Century Modern style, Basusree started off its journey by screening the first film of M S Subhalakshmi’s Meera followed by Uday Shankar’s Kalpana. Basusree continued its journey by hosting films that have acquired cult status in the oeuvre of Indian Cinéma. Satyajit Ray’s Pather Panchali was premiered in the hall in presence of Sri Bidhan Chandra Roy, as well as films Ray’s films like Aparajito and Sonar Kella. This is also the cinema hall where the car used for Ritwik Ghatak’s Ajantrik was cranked up on the balcony by using a crane for the premier of the film. Amongst prominent later award winning directors, Goutam Ghosh’s Paar was also premiered at Basusree. The Bengali new year musical extravaganza had legendary artists like Hemanta Mukherjee, S.D Burman, Kishore Kumar performing, and had evening soirées where luminaries such as Pandit Ravi Shankar, Ustad Alla Rakha, Lata Mangeshkar performed in packed houses. Film stars such as Uttam Kumar to Suchitra Sen, to legends of Bengali Screen Bhanu Bandopadhyay, Anil Chattopadhyay to artists and composers like Shyamal Mitra and many many such luminaries have walked through these portals. This was the famous address where one could witness theses legends engaged in adda (conversations) around artistic collaborations. Basusree is continuing its heritage with its screenings with new international programmes and events, like the French film cycle (started in 2016) with French Embassy, and German Goethe Institute/Pratay Gender Trust/Sapho recent LGBT Film Festival, French Music concerts, alternative films and many upcoming surprises. An unique stand alone single screen theatre for those who love the old charm and ambiance along with new innovative screenings and programmes.
