The Weight of Duration: Faith and Futility in Tarkovsky’s Long Take
In the landscape of modern cinema, where the average shot length continues to shrink in favor of rapid sensory stimulation, the work of Andrei Tarkovsky remains a radical sanctuary of stillness. Tarkovsky famously defined filmmaking as "sculpting in time," an act of taking a block of duration and hewing away the irrelevancy until only the essential rhythm of existence remains. Nowhere is this philosophy more visceral than in his 1983 masterpiece, Nostalghia. Through his refusal to cut, Tarkovsky transforms the cinematic frame from a window of observation into a vessel for meditation, culminating in a nine-minute candle crossing that serves as a profound liturgy of perseverance.
The power of Tarkovsky’s "long take" lies in its ability to impose a physical weight upon the spectator. By holding a shot far beyond the point of narrative utility, he strips away the audience’s passive consumerism and replaces it with an active, often uncomfortable, presence. In Nostalghia, the protagonist Gorchakov is tasked with carrying a lit candle across the steaming, mineral-streaked waters of the Bagno Vignoni. The camera follows him in a single, unbroken nine-minute take. As the wind snuffs the flame, Gorchakov returns to the beginning, relighting the "flimsy" wick and shielding it with his coat. This repetition, captured without the relief of a montage, forces the viewer to experience the agonizing passage of every second. We are not merely watching a scene; we are enduring it alongside him.
This temporal endurance serves as a bridge between the physical and the metaphysical. In a world increasingly obsessed with achievement, efficiency, and visible results, Gorchakov’s act is objectively futile. He is a man broken by "nostalghia"—a deep, spiritual homesickness—and his ritual offers no tangible solution to his grief or the world’s decay. However, the long take intervenes to mediate this apparent pointlessness.
