Stockfish is a festival for film lovers which is held by filmmaking professionals in Iceland. The festival builds its foundation on the Reykjavík Film Festival which was founded in 1978. The purpose of the festival is to serve filmmaking and film culture in Iceland by screening new quality films from around the world and inviting foreign professionals to share their knowledge. Thus the festival aims to strengthen the Icelandic film industry and its connection to the rest of the world. Over 30 handpicked award winning films from all over the world are screened during the festival. Note that we do not accept submissions.

"I just kept filming and this very strange little film became, actually, my favourite of everything I've made," says Hlynur Pálmason of his playful, atmospheric film "Joan of Arc," now screening at Bíó Paradís.

Meet Katla Sólnes, winner of Best Narrative Short at Sprettfiskur and recipient of the Eva María Daniels Award.

With her film Embla, Katla captured the jury with a story that feels both intimate and mythic, exploring creation, control, and the fragile boundary between artist and subject.

At this year’s Sprettfiskur competition, she was awarded the Eva María Daniels Award — a prize of 1,500,000 ISK in memory of producer Eva María Danielsdóttir — along with the Best Narrative Short prize, which includes a 1,000,000 ISK equipment rental grant from Kukl.

In our conversation, Katla reflects on her creative process, the origins of Embla, and what it means to bring something to life—only to watch it evolve beyond your control.

Check the full interview to discover the voice behind one of this year’s most striking films.

Through image, memory, and landscape — a conversation shaped by distance and belonging.

Irish photographer Juliette Rowland reflects on the journey that first brought her from Ireland to Iceland, and how that encounter continues to shape her artistic gaze. Rooted in observation and informed by her background in psychology, her work lingers in the subtle space between the real and the perceived — where atmosphere becomes narrative.

In this intimate interview by filmmaker Sol Berruezo Pichon-Rivière, Juliette traces the quiet influences of Iceland’s landscapes, and the emotional undercurrents that run through her images.

Presented by Stockfish Film & Industry Festival in collaboration with Culture Ireland.

A portrait of an artist shaped by place, and the spaces in between.

Leikstjóri Magnús Andersen

Word of the Jury:
"With outstanding art direction and a clear vision, everything just works, from the cinematography and editing, to the styling and the performance.
At a time when we’re constantly flooded with content on social media, and AI-generated visuals are reshaping what we find visually impressive and interesting, the human element and humor have never been more important.
And that’s exactly what makes this video stand out. Not only is it well crafted in every department, but you can actually feel the joy behind it, and that energy comes through to the viewer. The Best Music Video of the Year is GKR – Stælar. "

Sérstök viðurkenning í flokki tónlistarmyndbanda: Of Monsters and Men – Television Love
Leikstjóri Erlendur Sveinsson

"A simple and clean concept that is perfectly executed. With a subtle performance from the band, the visuals are carefully crafted, dreamy and nostalgic. The video is calm but still holds your attention."

Í flokki stuttra heimildaverka: Íslenskur Herkúles
Leikstjóri Orri Guðmundsson

Word of the Jury: "It is always a challenge for a character portrait to find a subject that will truly carry the film and capture the interest and emotions of the audience. Our winner truly accomplished that with a raw and intimate – and perhaps most importantly – incredibly sincere portrayal of the human spirit, both in its strengths and its weaknesses. On behalf of the jury, it is my privilege to award the first prize for best documentary short to Orri Guðmundsson for his film Icelandic Hercules, which gives us a truly fascinating insight into the life of social media personality and health influencer, Gummi Emil."

Í flokki stuttmynda - Eva María Daniels verðlaunin: Embla
Leikstjóri: Katla Sólnes Katla Sólnes
Framleiðandi: Jóna Gréta Hilmarsdóttir

Text from the jury:
Narrative:

"It is a tremendous pleasure to see a young director emerge with a unique and captivating style and voice. Furthermore, our winner boldly uses a classic narrative device to address issues of gender and misogynistic backlash, and the perennial desire of the patriarchy to shape and curate femininity. In a day and age when men are being offered AI companionship on their phones, this film speaks to how embedded unequal power relations are in our culture. That it is done with an astute eye for visually conveying a world and a mood bodes extremely well for Katla Sólnes, whose film Embla is the jury winner in the category of narrative short."
