Ieva Raudsepa (b. 1992) is an artist from Riga, Latvia, working with video, photography, and text. Throughout her practice, she has explored the contested histories, images, and identities of Eastern Europe, with a particular interest in the relationship between centre and periphery and how this is translated into narratives of places and people.

Raudsepa holds a BA in Philosophy from the University of Latvia and an MFA from the California Institute of the Arts. She is also a graduate of the Meisterschüler*innen programme at the Academy of Fine Arts Leipzig and the Mountain School of Arts in Los Angeles. Recent exhibitions include Fever Dream at Meduza (2025, Vilnius), Tokyo Highway Scene at Riga Contemporary Art Space (2025), Superior Comfort (2024, Berlin), Letters at oxfordberlin (2022, Berlin), Closed for Crisis / Take Care of Each Other at LOW (2021, Rīga), and Future Ghosts at Human Resources (2019, Los Angeles).



Following the screening, there will be an opportunity to discuss her film Fever Dream (2025) in person and hear insights into the making of the project. The conversation, focusing on ghosts and ghosting in Raudsepa’s practice, will be moderated by Paula Veidenbauma.

Ghosts are everywhere. Conventionally attached to abandoned houses and inherited properties, they also appear in less expected places: on dating apps, in underground garages, at construction sites, along riverbanks, in dreams and nightmares. And ghosts tend to return. Their reappearance in a particular site, often described as haunting, disrupts linear understandings of time and troubles the boundaries between past and present, opening a space for spectral negotiation: was it truly there, or merely a hallucination before the eyes?

𝑮𝒉𝒐𝒔𝒕𝒆𝒅 engages with expanded notions of spectrality in moving image practice. Rather than focusing on the ghost as a visible figure within the frame, the programme considers it as something that holds together that does not fully cohere, and that can also ghost, disappear without notice.

Narratives are not neutral structures, but devices that organize, select, and render reality intelligible. They shape what is visible or invisible, often framing the world through an anthropocentric perspective that places the human at the center.

Yet earthly reality is fundamentally interspecies: a dense coexistence of human and non-human beings.

Through hybrid forms between documentary, essay, and speculative fiction, these works engage with what Le Guin calls a “strange reality,” where boundaries between human and non-human become porous and entangled.

The second chapter of the programme brings together the works of Riar Rizaldi (“Fanfictie: Volcanology”) and Andrés Jurado (“Bienvenidos Conquistadores Interplanetarios y del Espacio Sideral”), both of which insinuate themselves into scientific and colonial discourses in order to reveal their constructed nature. Their practices generate new languages, opening up spaces for alternative forms of imagination. The dialogue between the two films unfolds through formal elements — colour, composition, and sound — which contribute to disorienting the gaze and redirecting it toward the “rest”: that which has been marginalised or silenced gradually acquires presence.

Narratives structure our world and legitimize systems of thought by selecting, arranging, and rendering reality intelligible. But what happens when these lines fracture, and time stratifies rather than proceeding linearly? The program Echoes of the Unknown: Interspecies Visions invites a critical reorientation of the gaze toward the “rest”, allowing alternative perceptions to emerge.
Following Ursula K. Le Guin’s intuition, narrative moves away from the model of the “weapon” toward that of the “carrier bag”: a container of relations, traces, and coexistences.
The world is no longer something to be dominated or exhaustively deciphered, but a space of unstable coexistence, traversed by echoes that invite listening and leave room for the unknown.

The first chapter brings together Nour Ouayda’s Secret Garden and Deborah Stratman’s Last Things. These films unfold as a constellation of gazes and narratives, resonating with the non-human presences they inhabit.

This special event features screenings of two films by artist and filmmaker Lucy Thane: “Bikini Kill in the UK” and “She’s Real Worse Than Queer”, key works for understanding the intersections of q***r culture, activism and the feminist punk scene of the 1990s.
Through a direct and participatory approach, Thane’s films explore marginal and political experiences, giving voice to often overlooked subjectivities. The screening will be accompanied by an introduction to Cinenova, a historic UK-based feminist distribution organization dedicated to circulating experimental and independent films made by women and gender non-conforming artists.
An opportunity to engage with cinema, politics, and collective practices of alternative distribution. ✩

A double feature dedicated to Sarah Jacobson, “queen of underground cinema” and a radical voice of 1990s riot grrrl feminism.
Her films are punk, DIY works that mix B-movie aesthetics, dark humour and a fierce look at gendered power — a manifesto for third-wave feminist independent cinema.
In the cult short I Was a Teenage S3r1al K1ll3r, 19-year-old Mary is “sick of s*xist pigs” and answers harassment, gaslighting and violence with a trail of murders that grotesquely flips the serial-killer myth and male paranoia around female rage.
In her only feature, Mary Jane’s Not a Virgin Anymore, Jacobson tells teenage s*xuality from a girl’s perspective. Set in a rundown movie theatre, ditching glossy teen-movie clichés for a lo-fi, ironic coming-of-age where s*x is finally told without moralism or the usual voyeuristic gaze.

Scratchy Super8 textures, a punk soundtrack, and girl protagonists who claim the space — and the rage — usually denied to them on screen. ✩

𝑾𝒐𝒎𝒆𝒏 & 𝑪𝒐𝒄𝒂𝒊𝒏𝒆 is a monthly pre-code cinema series hosted by Caroline Cassin at the Cinema Museum in London — described by Time Out as “a brilliant film series celebrating the fierce and liberated women of early cinema.”
For the first time, the series comes to Milan.

𝐀𝐛𝐨𝐮𝐭 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐜𝐮𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐨𝐫: Caroline Cassin is an Assistant Programmer at the British Film Institute and holds an MA in Film Studies, Programming and Curation from the National Film and Television School. Her projects explore and re-examine women’s history in the film industry, both behind and in front of the camera. In 2024 she curated the Dorothy Arzner retrospective at the BFI — and now brings it to CinemaO across three evenings.
