THE DISCOVERY OF THE TALKING CHRIST

Recently restored this huge Christ is now located in the beautiful marble chapel in San Francesco della Vigna

The artist is unknown but it dates probably to the early XV th century and it is a work of art of extremely high quality.

It was sculpted in maple wood and painted with tempera colours.

We don't have much information about this crucifix but what we actually know is that it was considered a MIRACOLOUS crucifix and lots of people came to venerate it when it was located in the friars' cloister because it was considered a miracolous working crucifix. Even women tried to come and venerate it but they usually were not admitted in the friars cloister and they risked to be excommunicated. But in the end the pope fogave them and gave them the possibility to admire and venerate the Christ.

This is A TALKING CHRIST!!!
This is the most amazing part of the story!! This Christ was used for a very special liturgical function, a sort of sacred theatre during Easter time!!! Inside the head is a hallowed cavity and there was a mechanism which was used TO MOVE CHRIST'S TONGUE AND SMOKE CAME OUT OF HIS MOUTH DRAMATIZING CHRIST'S LAST BREATH!!!

Just imagine how amazing was the effect of this talking Christ!!!

LA SCOPERTA DEL CRISTO PARLANTE

Recentemente restaurato questo enorme Cristo grande più del naturale si trova ora nella bellissima
ca****la di marmo della chiesa di San Francesco della Vigna

L'artista è ancora sconosciuto ma l'opera può essere datata all'inizio del XV secolo

Il Cristo è un'opera straordinaria scolpita su legno d'acero e dipinta a tempera.

Questo è un CRISTO PARLANTE!!! Questo Cristo era usato durante il periodo di Pasqua nelle rappresentazioni religiose teatrali!!! All'interno della testa in una cavità era stato creato un meccanismo per permettere alla lingua di muoversi e del fumo usciva dalla bocca per creare l'effetto dell'ultimo respiro di Cristo!!!

This wonderful painting is a work of art inside Saint Francesco della vigna in Venice

The author was a friar Fra Antonio da Negroponte

This is the only painting he realized and signed

But we don't have any information about his life

For sure he had studied in contact with Vivarini, Bellini and I would say Mantegna and Squarcione and the artist of the early renaissance in Padua

We can notice his skillful attention to details of decoration gold details in the Virgin dress, but also lots of flowers painted with great botanic knowledge

All the flowers and animals more than 12 different animals expecially birds and frogs and turtle had a special meaning and are part of the beautiful garden where the Virgin is the main center and focus

But look also at the perspective of the thone, a small architecture and all the carved details on the steps copied from ancient marbles!!

Hope after looking at these pictures you really wish to come and see it in person!!!

Non abbiamo informazioni sulla sua vita e formazione

Anche se ammirando la sua opera appare evidente che si sia formato a contatto con Vivarini, Bellini ed anche Mantegna e l'ambiente artistico umanista del primo Rinascimento di Squarcione a Padova

Notate l'attenzione ancora gotica e quasi miniaturistica per i dettagli quali i ricami dorati sul manto della Vergine...ma anche i fiori rappresentati con precisione botanica ed almeno 12 specie di animali, specialmente uccelli, ma anche rane e tartarughe

Ogni animale e fiore ha un suo significato in relazione alla Vergine ed è parte di una preghiera di lode in Suo onore e del meraviglioso giardino di cui lei è vera Signora

Ma guardate anche la prospettiva del trono ed i dettagli scolpiti sui gradini che sono copia di preziosi marmi all'antica e del gusto antiquario dell'epoca!!

Spero che vi sia venuta voglia di vedere di persona questa meraviglia!!!

A less touristic place in Venice for you!!

The church of San Giorgio dei Greci is a religious building in the city of Venice, located in the Castello district in Calle della Madonna, near the church of San Zaccaria and is the oldest and most historic church of Orthodoxy in the diaspora. Its construction was made possible thanks to the contributions of the Orthodox Greeks of Venice and the Greek sailors passing through the city. Isolated, towards the Rio dei Greci Canal stands the bell tower. The church was called by the Venetians "dei Greci" or "Greek" because of the ancient Greek language used in the Greek-Byzantine rite professed by its practitioners.
In November 1991, by decision of the Ecumenical Patriarchate of Constantinople, the church became the cathedral of the Orthodox Archdiocese of Italy and Malta.

In the building adjacent to the church there is a small Museum of Greek-Byzantine icons and Orthodox sacred vestments.

FASCINATING VENETIAN STORIES-EPISODE 1

Miracle of the Relic of the Holy Cross in Campo San Lio

Our story starts from one of the most fascinating paintings in venice, part of a cycle of paintings realized to decorate the scuola di san Giovanni evangelista in venice.
the “Schools” Scuole in venice were ancient religious associations organized by laymen with charity purpose.
They helped widows or orphelins or poor people. They protected and garanted the workers’ rights and so on. They had a strong tradition and they had a saint patron.
In this case obviously the saint patron was saint john the evangelist.
This scuola grande di san Giovanni evangelista was one of the most powerful and ancient in town founded in 1261.
But this scuola became even more powerful and famous in xv century because the scuola received a special gift the relic of the holy cross (see the picture attached and the golden relic in the middle of the painting).
According to medieval theologians, as christ’s blood touched the cross upon which he was crucified, the wood of the cross became incorruptible and infinite pieces could be removed from the cross.
That’s why the holy cross relics were so famous!!!
These relics were considered miracle working relics and for this reason they were so precious.
So what is represented in this unique masterpiece?
This painting represents a famous event, the miracle of the holy cross .
According to the legend, during a funeral of a brother of the scuola in 1474 a miracle took place in campo san lio.
The dead man was not so faithful to the relic so the cross brought in his honor by the brothers suddenly became so heavy so heavy they couldn’t carry it to the church. The relic didn’t want to stay at the funeral of unfaithful brother.
They gave it to the san lio priest and they replaced the relic with a normal cross.
This scene is so detailed and the artist mansueti represented a venetian urban space.
It’s like living in xv century!!!
We can admire all the buildings as they looked like in xv century, the wooden bridge, the gondolas, the church and lots and lots of curious people looking at the miracle from their windows.
Just look at the detail of a man walking on the roof following a cat, clothes drying outside and people building a terrace (a tipical venetian Altana) on the top of the palace.
The first man on the left side crossing the bridge is holding a paper showing the artist signature Giovanni mansueti.
Another funny detail is the advertisement on the right side “casa da fitar ducati 5” which means “renting house 5 ducats”.

THE MOST ROMANTIC LEGEND IN VENICE!!!
LOVE IS STRONGER THAN EVERYTHING!!!
The legend of the rosebud of saint mark-the 25th of April
It’s a strong tradition here in venice that every 25th of April, the Saint Mark’s day, every men should give their beloved a red rose bud.
But what is the story behind this chivalry gesture?
A very romantic story…the most romantic legend in venice!!!
According to the legend, in the 8th century, Maria, a beautiful young venetian lady but also very well known because she was the Doge’s Orso Partecipatio’s daughter, fell in love with Tancredi.
Maria was so passionate she was nicknamed “Vulcana” because her love and passion could be so explosive as a volcano while Tancredi was a medieval poet.
But her father the doge forbade them to marry because Tancredi was not a nobleman.
So Maria suggested tancredi to became a brave knight.
In this way her father could change his mind and approve the wedding recognizing tancredi’s bravery and giving as an honour a noble status to the young men.
Sadly, as in many love stories, the hero died while fighting in Charlemagne army.
Mortally injuried, he fell dying into a white rosebush and he stained the white roses with his red blood so they became red rose bud.
Before dying he asked his friend Orlando to give a red rosebud to his beloved maria as a sign of their true love.
The day after Maria was found dead in her own bed with the red rosebud on her breast.
According to the legend, every 25th of April Maria wanders around Venice, she is a lady dressed in white holding as a contrast color a red rose bud.
