A hundred years after her birth, Marilyn Monroe still haunts the screen like a vision, both radiant and fragile. An absolute Hollywood icon and the embodiment of glamour and desire, she remains above all an actress of remarkable sensitivity, whose talent unfolded across roles spanning comedy, drama, and melodrama.

From the sparkling lightness of 𝐆𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐥𝐞𝐦𝐞𝐧 𝐏𝐫𝐞𝐟𝐞𝐫 𝐁𝐥𝐨𝐧𝐝𝐞𝐬 to the melancholic depth of 𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐌𝐢𝐬𝐟𝐢𝐭𝐬, through the subversive modernity of 𝐒𝐨𝐦𝐞 𝐋𝐢𝐤𝐞 𝐈𝐭 𝐇𝐨𝐭 and the striking early signs of her dramatic power in 𝐃𝐨𝐧’𝐭 𝐁𝐨𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐫 𝐭𝐨 𝐊𝐧𝐨𝐜𝐤, this retrospective paints the portrait of a complex artist. It reveals the paradox of a rich filmography too often overshadowed by myth, yet deeply rooted in the codes of classical Hollywood. Working with legendary directors like Howard Hawks, Billy Wilder, and John Huston, Monroe crafted a singular screen presence, blending comic grace, emotional intensity, and a raw, delicate vulnerability.

Behind the icon with sparkling laughter and shimmering gowns emerges an actress of infinite nuance, where each role reveals a crack, a disturbance, an intimate truth. This retrospective invites you to (re)discover, between grace and melancholy, the mystery of Marilyn Monroe.

Young, bold, and passionate. This May and June, dive into the energy of the Nouvelle Vague, the French New Wave that redefined cinema through rebellion and personal expression.

In late-1950s Paris, a group of cinephiles, from Jean-Luc Godard and François Truffaut to Agnès Varda and Claude Chabrol, upended convention and reinvented not just film language but the very way films were made. From landmarks like 𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝟒𝟎𝟎 𝐁𝐥𝐨𝐰𝐬, 𝐉𝐮𝐥𝐞𝐬 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐉𝐢𝐦, 𝐂𝐥é𝐨 𝐟𝐫𝐨𝐦 𝟓 𝐭𝐨 𝟕 and 𝐁𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐭𝐡𝐥𝐞𝐬𝐬 to more rarely screened but equally important titles such as 𝐏𝐚𝐫𝐢𝐬 𝐁𝐞𝐥𝐨𝐧𝐠𝐬 𝐭𝐨 𝐔𝐬, 𝐀𝐝𝐢𝐞𝐮 𝐏𝐡𝐢𝐥𝐢𝐩𝐩𝐢𝐧𝐞 and a selection of early shorts, these films capture a moment when young filmmakers were breaking all the rules.

Sun’s out 🌞☀️ Check out our fresh 𝗠𝗮𝘆 & 𝗝𝘂𝗻𝗲 𝗙𝗹𝗮𝘀𝗵𝗳𝗼𝗿𝘄𝗮𝗿𝗱 filled with cinematic voices, icons and rediscoveries.

This spring, our programme opens with a retrospective celebrating the iconic 𝐅𝐫𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐡 𝐍𝐞𝐰 𝐖𝐚𝐯𝐞, a movement that redefined film language through bold spirit and innovation – from foundational to less frequently screened works, as well as an insightful lecture by Dick Tomasovic (with English simultaneous interpretation available) and a short film programme taking you to the French Riviera… and the cherry on top: all films are subtitled in English.

𝐌𝐚𝐫𝐢𝐥𝐲𝐧 𝐌𝐨𝐧𝐫𝐨𝐞: the woman, the myth, the legend. June marks a century since the birth of Hollywood’s ultimate icon – a luminous yet fragile presence, and a deeply sensitive actress whose talent shines across comedy, drama and melodrama.

𝗟𝗶𝗻𝗼 𝗕𝗿𝗼𝗰𝗸𝗮 and 𝗝𝗼𝗮̃𝗼 𝗖𝗮𝗻𝗶𝗷𝗼 take centre stage in two film cycles shining a light on filmmakers whose works are at once deeply personal and profoundly engaged with social realities.

𝗚𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘁 𝗥𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗼𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀 returns with landmark films restored to their full brilliance, including Rᴀsʜᴏᴍᴏɴ, Cʟᴏsᴇ Eɴᴄᴏᴜɴᴛᴇʀs ᴏꜰ ᴛʜᴇ Tʜɪʀᴅ Kɪɴᴅ and Dᴇᴇᴘ Cʀɪᴍsᴏɴ, while 𝗖𝗶𝗻𝗲𝗺𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗰 𝗦𝗶𝗯𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗴𝘀 juxtaposes Iɴꜰᴇʀɴᴀʟ Aꜰꜰᴀɪʀs by Andrew Lau and Alan Mak with Martin Scorsese’s Tʜᴇ Dᴇᴘᴀʀᴛᴇᴅ.

𝗖𝗶𝗻𝗲𝗺𝗮 𝗣𝗮𝗿𝗮𝗱𝗶𝘀𝗼 and 𝗔𝗳𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗻𝗼𝗼𝗻 𝗔𝗱𝘃𝗲𝗻𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲𝘀 welcome our young film lovers for the last screenings before the traditional summer break.

And, as always, plenty of other screenings, ciné-conferences, talks and presentations across our various locations 💛

🎥 𝗪𝗵𝘆 𝐅𝐫𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐞𝐬 𝐇𝐚?
Our Cinémathèque Film Club guest Larisa Faber tells you why you should absolutely join her for Noah Baumbach’s indie classic.

What’s almost as good – and sometimes better – than watching a film? Talking about it, of course! So let’s dissect, discuss and debate this beautifully raw, honest coming-of-age story, a love letter to messy adulthood.
