There are some plants which lay hidden from appreciation. Either they are very common and we no longer acknowledge them, or they are not appreciated in their entire glory! I think this is the case with Justicia adhatoda. This acanthaceae is native to Asia and its growing area is quite large. I have seen it growing wild in large numbers in the desert in Rajasthan. Despite its large leaves it resists drought very well. Its name comes from Tamil and means “untouched by goats”.
Here at Palm Orchids, Marrakech it is grown from seed or cuttings.

Let’s celebrate spring with the colour tones of Ceiba speciosa (formerly Chorisia speciosa) new leaves ! The Floss Silk Tree is native to South America where they call it Palo Borracho! I saw my first one 40 years ago in Marrakech in the Palace of Bahia parking lot. I didn’t know what it was and neither did the local nurseries. I reintroduced this fabulous tree in cultivation when I begun growing plants in my nursery in Casablanca in the early nineties ! Grown from seeds at Palm Orchids, Marrakech !

Agave titanota, Oaxaca, Mexico. 50 to 60cm.
Agave titanota is one of the most heterogeneous (polymorphic) agaves that I know and yet I recognize it at first glance. Native to Oaxaca, Mexico, it can be green, gray, blue and its leaves can be slender or compact, its thorns can be black and simple, white and extremely jagged. I believe its main distinction lies in that particular h***y margin which bears the spines. It is monocarpic (dies after flowering) but it rejects small subjects that take over.
Sown and grown at the Palm Orchids nursery, Marrakech.

L’Agave titanota est l’un des agaves les plus hétérogène (polymorphe) que je connaisse et pourtant je le reconnais au premier coup d’œil. Originaire de Oaxaca, Mexique, il peut être vert, gris, bleu et ses feuilles peuvent être élancées ou compactes, ces épines peuvent être noires et simples, blanches et extrêmement découpées. Je crois que sa principale distinction réside en cette marge cornée particulière qui porte les épines. Elle est monocarpique (meurt après sa floraison) mais elle rejette de petits sujets qui prennent la relève.
Semé et cultivé à la pépinière Palm Orchids, Marrakech.

English below: On l'appelle, a tort, Datura. Cet arbuste de la famille des tomates (Solanaceae) est un Brugmansia. Variete "Double Apricot" pour celui-ci. Ces plantes sont Sud Americaines pour la plupart. Elles exhalent un parfum subtil, parfois intense, surtout le soir et poussent tres bien a Marrakech. Les indiens d'Amazonie l'utilisent comme plante médicinale, c'est un puissant psychothrope. Produit a Palm Orchids, Marrakech.

It is called, wrongly, Datura. This shrub of the tomato family (Solanaceae) is a Brugmansia. Variety "Double Apricot" for this one. These plants are mostly South American. They exhale a subtle fragrance, sometimes intense, especially in the evening and grow very well in Marrakech. People of Amazonia use it as a medicinal plant, it is a powerful psychotropic. Produced at Palm Orchids, Marrakech.

L'Ouest de l'Australie possède un climat très similaire à celui du Maroc, caracterisé par des pluies d'hiver et des étés chauds et secs. C'est en me basant sur ces critères que je choisis les plantes pour ma pépinière. Il serait beaucoup plus difficile de cultiver des plantes originaires de l'Est de l'Australie car ces régions disposent d'étés chauds et pluvieux et d'hivers secs.
Melaleuca teretifolia est originaire de l'Ouest de l'Australie et fleurit à Palm Orchids Marrakech pour la première fois! Il peut atteindre 5 m de hauteur et ses feuilles réduites à de simples aiguilles l'aident à supporter les grosses chaleurs. Nous avons été comblés par des floraisons roses et d'autres blanches. Ne sont elles pas incroyables ?

Western Australia has a climate very similar to the one of Morocco, characterized by rainy winters and hot, dry summers. I generally choose the plants to be grown at my nursery based on these criteria. It would be much more difficult to grow plants native to eastern Australia as these regions feature hot, rainy summers and dry winters.
Melaleuca teretifolia is native to Western Australia and is blooming at Palm Orchids Marrakech for the first time! It can reach 5 m in height and its leaves reduced to simple needles help it to withstand the hot weather. We were overwhelmed by pink blooms and white ones. Aren't they amazing?

When I first started growing them, many of the aloes showed, according to me, huge similarities between them. But my gaze has become more refined and I have learned to look at them. The arrangement of the flowers, the shape of the inflorescences, the color of the foliage are all singularities which are now obvious. Aloe chabaudii is a small aloe that benefits from being planted in mass, it will gratify you with a cloud of scarlet flowers in January and February. A real spring before its time. It comes to us from South Africa and is particularly resistant to heat. Produced at Palm Orchids, Marrakech.

Lorsque j'ai commencé à les cultiver, de nombreux aloès présentaient, selon moi, d'énormes similitudes entre eux. Mais mon regard s'est affiné et j'ai appris à les regarder. La disposition des fleurs, la forme des inflorescences, la couleur du feuillage sont autant de singularités désormais évidentes. L'Aloe chabaudii est un petit aloès qui gagne à être planté en masse, il vous gratifiera d'un nuage de fleurs écarlates en janvier et février. Un vrai printemps avant l'heure. Il nous vient d'Afrique du Sud et est particulièrement résistant à la chaleur. Produit chez Palm Orchids, Marrakech.

This is one of the most beautiful and distinctive aloes, with its long, twisted and recurved leaves resembling an octopus. Aloe vanbalenii occurs in northern South Africa (Kwazulu Natal and Swaziland). It will grow in full sun or partial shade, stemless and will develop into dense groups to 60cm. Grown organically at Palm Orchids, Marrakesh.

C'est l'un des aloès les plus beaux et les plus distinctifs, avec ses longues feuilles tordues et recourbées ressemblant à une pieuvre. Aloe vanbalenii est présent dans le nord de l'Afrique du Sud (Kwazulu Natal et Swaziland). Il poussera en plein soleil ou à mi-ombre, sans tige et se développera en groupes denses jusqu'à 60 cm. Aloe elegans pousse naturellement en Ethiopie (également en Érythrée et au Soudan) en montagne entre 1600 et 2500m d'altitude. J'aime particulièrement l'abondance de sa floraison, jaune ou orange, et qui intervient en automne (octobre - novembre) quand presqu'aucune autre floraison n'a lieu. Cette photo a été prise il y a 1 mois à Palm Orchids, Marrakech où ont été semées ces plantes il y a environ 8 ans.

Aloe elegans grows naturally in Ethiopia (also in Eritrea and Sudan) in the mountains between 1600 and 2500m above sea level. I particularly like the abundance of its flowering, yellow or orange, and which occurs in autumn (October - November) when almost no other flowering takes place. This photo was taken 1 month ago in Palm Orchids, Marrakech where these plants were sown about 8 years ago.
