In the "Game of Thrones" TV series and the "A Song of Ice and Fire" book series by George R.R. Martin, Viserys Targaryen, the elder brother of Daenerys Targaryen, meets a gruesome end due to a pot of molten gold. This event is often referred to as "the golden crown." Here's why it happened:
Viserys had an obsession with reclaiming the Iron Throne, which he saw as his birthright as a Targaryen. However, he lacked the means to achieve this goal and was desperate for power. He arranged to marry his sister Daenerys to Khal Drogo, a powerful Dothraki warlord, in the hope of gaining an army to support his claim.
Viserys's arrogance and cruelty were well-known. When he grew frustrated with the Dothraki's slow progress towards Westeros, he became increasingly demanding and disrespectful towards Khal Drogo and his people.
During an argument in Vaes Dothrak, Viserys threatened Daenerys and her unborn child, which greatly offended the Dothraki, as their customs forbid the shedding of blood in their sacred city. To punish Viserys for his insolence and to give Daenerys the respect she deserved as Khaleesi, Khal Drogo executed Viserys in a manner that Viserys had constantly demanded: by giving him "a golden crown."
Khal Drogo melted down a pot of gold until it was molten and poured it over Viserys's head, killing him in a horrific and symbolic manner. This event underscores the brutality and harshness of the world of "Game of Thrones" and the consequences of Viserys's own actions and character flaws.
