LAB -1

We are LAB-1: films, friends, and events in the heart of Eindhoven. An independent cinema and event space, a coffee spot by day, and a bar by night.

We are a home for internationals and locals, and a place to stay moved. At LAB-1 you can experience films, live music, exhibitions, parties and events in 1 building! LAB-1 stands for retro, coziness, dynamism and creativity, a place to enjoy, hang out and feel at home. In LAB-1 you can work, play games, chill or relax in the evening with a drink in our cinema bar. You can watch the best Hollywood,

music films, art-house, classic and documentary films in one of our five cinemas and attend a comedy night, concert or event in our event room. For the best parties you can go to the club on the second floor and at the same time you go one floor higher to attend one of our film marathons. We are much more than a cinema. A place to amaze yourself! In 2014, LAB-1 was temporarily located in the abandoned building of Philips Physical laboratory on STRIJP-S. And in 2017, LAB-1 was temporarily located in the oldest building of Eindhoven: the Mariënhage monastery. In 2018 we took over the former Euro Cinema/cinema at the Keizersgracht 19 in Eindhoven! Farewell to Tony Gatlif, who has died at the age of 77.

From Latcho Drom to Gadjo Dilo, Gatlif was drawn to people and cultures living beyond borders, and especially to Roma life and culture. His poetic, fiery films celebrated freedom and the power of music.

We will miss this energy on our screens. 🖤

Stefan Pop is een razendsnelle, scherpe comedian die al jaren tot de top van de Nederlandse stand-up scene behoort. Terminator 2: Judgment Day - James Cameron’s 1991 sequel gave us the T-1000 and turned the T-800 into one of the most iconic heroes of the ’90s. See it back on the big screen 35 years later.

The Death of Robin Hood - We know Robin Hood as the legendary outlaw who stole from the rich. This time, he is older, wounded and facing the end of his story.

Leviticus - Two teenage boys fall for each other in a deeply religious Australian town, but when their relationship is discovered, a conversion-therapy ritual unleashes a violent supernatural entity.

Dutch Conversation Club is looking for volunteers! 🧡

Every Wednesday evening at LAB-1, a group of volunteers helps internationals practise their Dutch in small conversation groups. The free language café has become increasingly popular, so they’re looking for a few new volunteers!

You don’t need to be a teacher or have teaching experience, just enthusiasm, an interest in meeting people from different backgrounds, and availability at least twice a month.

We're coming back with LAB-1 LIVE CINEMA, where visual gems turn into hypnotising performances with live music. 🔥

This time, we’ll immerse ourselves in Philippe Garrel’s radical, dialogue-free LE RÉVÉLATEUR (1968), with a mysterious live score by Réka Csiszér & Radwan Ghazi Moumneh, blending electronics, cello, buzuk, rababa and voice.

Laura Samani’s Un anno di scuola takes us to a high school in Trieste in the early 2000s. The film is loosely inspired by Giani Stuparich’s 1929 novel, which Samani first read at the very same school, when she was the same age as its characters.

What’s new at LAB-1 this week?🌟

Hundreds of Beavers - Made with almost no dialogue and a tiny budget, this black-and-white surreal slapstick follows a 19th-century applejack salesman taking on an army of increasingly ridiculous beavers.

Un Anno di Scuola - A story first written in 1929 gets a new life on screen, now set in 1980s Trieste, where a new female student joins an all-boys class and quickly disrupts the dynamics between her classmates.

Les Parapluies de Cherbourg - Every line is sung in Jacques Demy’s colourful 1964 classic, turning an ordinary love story into a bittersweet musical about young love, separation, and the lives we end up choosing.

Below the Clouds - Beneath Mount Vesuvius, archaeologists uncover Roman ruins while firefighters explore secret tunnels. Gianfranco Rosi captures a Naples that lives with the volcano’s ever-present threat.

Peter Hujar’s Day - On December 9, 1974, photographer Peter Hujar spent a day talking with writer Linda Rosenkrantz about his life, work, and the characters of New York’s downtown art scene. The result is an unusually intimate portrait built almost entirely from one day of talking.
