AFFR explores the relationship between film, cities and architecture. 7–11 October 2026 in Rotterdam

AFFR explores the relationship between film, cities and architecture by programming and screening architecture films and by organizing introductions and debates. Architecture films investigate the meaning of the city and architecture. They portray cities, buildings and their designers, show that architecture cannot be understood without its context, and investigate the role of the city in our ever

yday lives. Moreover, they frequently reveal architects and urbanists to be powerless gods whose works, once built, acquire very different meanings and functions to those envisaged. AFFR screens documentaries and feature films from at home and abroad that address these subjects. They are complemented by introductions, discussions and debates about the present, past and future of architecture and urbanism. Since 2000, AFFR has grown to become a leading film festival for architects, city lovers, film buffs and students. The festival connects a wide audience with new and existing places in the city, thereby enhancing the status of Rotterdam as a city of architecture.

Nous’Klaer x Operator x AFFR: Architects of the After Hours 🌠

Together with Nous'klaer and Operator Radio, AFFR brings film and nightlife together with Architects of the After Hours on Saturday 10 October.

Expect a night that moves beyond the cinema screen, with live music, DJ sets, performances, and our Liminal Spaces film programme: taking you into worlds that seem strangely familiar, yet where something is not quite right.

Had enough of sitting in your cinema seat? Nous'Klaer and Operator will be transforming the venue into a space where you can dance till the early hours, with multiple rooms and stellar international and local DJs.

From 7 to 11 October, AFFR transforms Rotterdam into the place to be for film and architecture.

We kick off with a festive Opening Night at Theater Rotterdam, followed by four packed festival days at LantarenVenster, featuring more than 90 films: from documentaries, features, shorts and classics to world premieres. Alongside, expect filmmaker talks, lectures, debates and much more.

↳ We’re also excited to return with our second immersive media programme at Nieuwe Instituut. From 8 to 25 October, explore the intersection of technology and architecture in (Un)authorised, free to visit in the Nieuwe Instituut’s Re-Centre.

Immersive Media at : (Un)Authorised

Step into new dimensions of the built environment with AFFR’s second immersive media programme hosted by Nieuwe Instituut

From 8 to 25 October 2026, Nieuwe Instituut invites you to their Re-Center to discover how technology is transforming the boundaries of architecture. Inspired by this year’s location, the exhibition (Un)Authorised questions the ways documentation practices of architecture and the built environment are transmuted into knowledge.

By bringing together immersive works that engage with personal testimonies, social media, moving images and other forms of archival materials, the exhibition unpacks the question: What counts as an architectural record?

Tickets are live! Join us for the Opening Night of

For the opening of AFFR 2026 we travel to Tokyo, with the Dutch premiere of Numakage Public Pool by Shingo Ota. A tender and bittersweet portrait of a beloved public swimming pool, filmed with warmth, humour and beautiful imagery.

For more than fifty years, Numakage Public Pool has been a daily refuge for children and families, a place of wellbeing for older residents, a workplace, and a discreet meeting point for the local LGBTQ+ community. When plans are made to demolish the pool to make way for a new school, an entire community is forced to confront the loss of this piece of public architecture. As residents, workers and local businesses fight to save the pool, the film becomes a moving reflection on the social significance of public spaces

Featured: Archined Classic: Hiroshima mon amour & Intro Pavlo Gorokhovskyi

A film that Archined editors believe every designer should see!

For this edition of AFFR, the selected classic is Hiroshima mon amour (1959) by Alain Resnais, a haunting meditation on trauma and memory in the aftermath of destruction. As a French actress and a Japanese architect spend a night together, their conversations reveal two contrasting ways of confronting destruction: escapism and reconstruction.

Beginning next month, AFFR and present ’s iconic work: Lost in Translation.

And what better setting for this film than Rotterdam’s skyline?

Better yet, the screening takes place on top of P-garage Mobypark, in one of Rotterdam’s rawest areas!

If you need a little reminder, follows two deeply lonely people, played by & , who meet for a brief but unforgettable moment in the immense and chaotic city of Tokyo.

This connection, however fleeting, makes all the difference.

More than twenty years after its release, Coppola’s tragicomic classic still resonates with anyone who has ever felt lost amidst skyscrapers and neon lights.
