SLEEPING DOGS (1977) This Sun 26th July 6.30pm - Celebrate Sam Neill with once in a lifetime guest the legendary Sir Ian Mune - in person talking with Ant Timpson about the making of Dogs and it’s legacy as an iconic NZ film.

Directed by one of greatest living directors Roger Donaldson, it was based on C. K. Stead’s 1971 New Zealand novel Smith’s Dream . It starred of course Sam Neill, Ian Mune, and US star Warren Oates. It was the first feature-length 35mm colour film produced entirely in New Zealand. The film became a major critical & commercial success both here and abroad, and it launched the career of Neill into the stratosphere. A political thriller with action elements, it follows a man alone character Smith (Neill) as New Zealand plunges into a police state after a fascist government institutes martial law following violent industrial disputes and a false flag attack. CHARITY BONUS : 50% of your hard earned cash will be donated to the NZ Nature Fund in Sir Sam Neill’s honour.

SLEEPING DOGS (1977) ✨ SAM NEILL TRIBUTE ✨ Sunday 26 July 6:30pm - Sir Ian Mune will be in at The Hollywood to present the screening and for a special Q&A. 50% of the proceeds will be donated to the NZ Nature Fund in Sir Sam Neill’s honour. Sleeping Dogs, the film that launched Neill’s career, was also the first feature-length movie shot on 35mm produced entirely in New Zealand. Roger Donaldson’s action thriller, that takes place in an imaginary New Zealand suffering civil unrest, has a litany of reasons for why it is one of the most important Kiwi films ever made, but Neill’s performance as the rebellious Smith, who fights back against fascist forces looking to take over his country, earned rave notices from critics and, the hearts of a nation.

JURASSIC PARK (1993) 4K 🦕 SAM NEILL TRIBUTE ✨ Sunday 26 July, 3:30pm - Any list reflecting on the career of Sam Neill will have to achknowledge his iconic performance as paleontologist Dr. Alan Grant in Steven Spielberg’s Jurassic Park. The story goes that given the expense of the ground-breaking CGI used in the film, producers were looking to hire a relatively unknown (to summer blockbuster audiences, that is) actor for the role of Grant, with Neill winning the part. Playing Grant, arguably, was not much of a stretch for Neill who made his name playing complex characters in arthouse cinema, but he nailed Grant’s outward stiff academic countenance and how that man would deal with the frightening ordeal of being chased by raptors!

POSSESSION (1981) ✨ SAM NEILL TRIBUTE ✨ Saturday 25 July, 8:45pm 4K Original Version - Something is wrong with Anna (Isabelle Adjani). Having taken a lover, she abruptly asks her husband, Mark (Sam Neill), for divorce. He’s desperate for an explanation, but Anna’s answers are elusive at best. She’s in crisis - becoming emotional, avoidant, self-harming, and neglectful of their son. Mark has no idea, but behind her increasingly erratic behaviour is a monstrous secret. Directed by Polish filmmaker Andrzej Żulawski - this film has cult favourite status for very good reason. Don’t miss it.

IN THE MOUTH OF MADNESS (1994) 4K ✨ Sam Neill Tribute: Saturday 25 July 6:30pm - John Carpenter’s mind-bending descent into literary horror - is a film that may have influenced (or outright borrowed from) Marenghi’s own “creative juices.” When horror novelist Sutter Cane vanishes, investigator Sam Neill stumbles into a world where fiction, madness and reality collapse in on themselves.

HUNT FOR THE WILDERPEOPLE (2016) Charity Screening: Saturday 25 July 4pm - We will be donating 50% of ticket sales to PAHU BARK as a tribute to Sam Neill. He was an enthusiastic animal lover and advocate for the protection of Aotearoa’s wilderness. We feel that he would really love this!

A film by Taika Waititi. Based on the book Wild Pork and Watercress by Barry Crump, Hunt for the Wilderpeople tells the story of Ricky (Julian Dennison), a defiant young city kid who finds himself on the run with his cantankerous foster uncle (Sam Neill) in the New Zealand bush. A national manhunt ensues, forcing the pair to put aside their differences and work together.

PAHU BARK is a nonprofit based in Ferry Landing, New Zealand. Dedicated to helping dogs. The founder also trains her own pound rescues in conservation mahi. They organise weekly micro-donations to support various animal rescues across the country.

Thank you to madmanfilmsnz for their support for this event.
