It's coming for us.

Na Hong-jin's new sci-fi film tracks the chaos that unfolds when a mysterious monster suddenly invades Hopo Port, a fictional coastal village located near the Demilitarized Zone.

The local police station chief and village people scramble to deal with extraterrestrial entities while residents form a defense group against them.

But all is not as it seems, and perceptions can be misleading. What begins as ignorance plants the seed of disaster, escalating through human conflict into a tragedy of cosmic proportions.

Join us for the closing event of Mātaki Mai, as we farewell another Te Wiki and stellar line-up of films from our taonga filmmakers.

In Unlikely Kin, directors Kim Webby and Michael Jonathan follow Ngātiwai kaumātua Hori Parata and son Te Kaurinui as they uphold the tikanga of harvesting stranded tohorā (whale). It explores the connections between whales, kiore (Polynesian rat) and kauri, while offering an insight into Māori environmental tikanga.

The documentary is timely as debate continues over the proposed Conservation Amendment Bill, which would make it easier to exchange or dispose of some conservation land and expand opportunities for economic activity on parts of the conservation estate.

3pm: Closing Event - includes a glass of wine and nibbles on arrival.

Calling all new filmmakers, join us for a Screening of POP: Masterclass + Q&A

Part comedy, part documentary, all heart ā€“ POP is filmmaker Tim Hamiltonā€™s meta love letter to independent filmmaking and the emotional impact of losing a beloved pet.

An American actor comes to Aotearoa to play a wannabe influencer on a quest to restart the internet after it goes dark. Simple concept. Easy to execute. Yeah, nah. His Kiwi directorā€™s unprocessed grief over the loss of his dog, quickly hijacks the shoot, dragging it off the rails and smashing the fourth wall to pieces.

If youā€™re an emerging filmmaker and attend a screening of POP, you could receive a $1000 grant, 100 hours of professional development, and a premiere through the Terror-Fi Film Festival.

Taratoa Stappard's gothic revenge nightmare makes a return to Alice. Rooted in the colonization and cultural theft inflicted upon the Māori people of Aotearoa/New Zealand in the mid-19th century, this critically acclaimed film exhibits a unique intelligence and soul, thoughtfully translating serious historic trauma into a piece of art.

Set inside an especially appalling corner of Victorian England, Mary (an exciting performance from Ariāna Osborne), travels from Aotearoa to North Yorkshire after receiving a mysterious letter about her biological family. Finding the letter-writer dead, she is trapped working as a governess for a wealthy former whaler.

The greatest horror is always colonisation.

Aotearoa New Zealand, 1978. In a small rural town, the Ropata family must pull together after their lives and community are turned upside down. ā€™s debut feature follows the curation of the Toi TÅ« Toi Ora: Contemporary Māori Art exhibition, which reveals the struggle for Māori artistic sovereignty within the structures of Aotearoa New Zealandā€™s cultural institutions.

As the scale of the exhibition grows, so does the institutional resistance. The result is a reckoning: whose story is being told, and who holds the pen? With many of the artworks exploring the legacy of colonialism, the making of the exhibition itself becomes a living reflection of that very struggle.
