AROHA AWARAU 1976-2026: It is with great sadness we share the news of the passing of takatāpui playwright, jounalist, filmmaker and one-of-a-kind creative mind Aroha Awarau. Of Ngāti Maru, Ngāti Porou, Niuean, and Samoan descent, Aroha staunchly refused to be pigeonholed, writing a play set in 1950s Hollywood as well as clutch of Māori themed short films. Two of these films -- Disrupt and Puti -- screened in the NZIFF Ngā Whanaunga selection, for which he also served as a jury member in 2023. His passing is felt by so many in the community, a voice lost who had so much more to say and do, including development of a feature through the Māoriland Indigenous Co-lab.
