Our theme this week is about art and painters and their muses and their assistants. Ian McKellen returns to the screen as Julian Sklar a once celebrated painter in London’s swinging sixties whose estranged children are conniving to create a legacy worth inheriting upon his inevitable demise in THE CHRISTOPHERS. Another British acting legend namely Derek Jacobi returns to play artist Lucien Freud in MOSS & FREUD. This is a based upon a true story where an unlikely artistic collaboration between the famously reclusive portrait artist and supermodel Kate Moss, whereby a rapport develops to the point of her becoming his muse.

'Growing up never ends'

New Zealand actor and filmmaker Chelsie Preston Crayford makes her feature directorial debut with this multi-generational family drama centred on a teenage girl, a middle-age mother, and a caterpillar-loving grandmother.

Set in a run-down Wellington villa in 2003, Caterpillar follows three women living separate lives under one leaky roof. Sixteen-year-old Cassie is all bravado and vulnerability, drifting into risky territory as she searches for belonging. Her mother Maxine, 52, is a formidable single parent and filmmaker on the brink of a long-awaited breakthrough, finally offered a greenlight—if she can land a star.

Holding everything together is Huia, Cassie’s grandmother, 80, whose life has been defined by quiet service to family and a private obsession with raising monarch caterpillars, dreaming of one day witnessing the legendary butterfly migration in Mexico.

Sometimes to move forwards you have to go back.

CHRISTY- the feature debut film from Director Brendan Canty, based on his short film of the same name, follows 17-year-old Christy at a crossroads after he’s kicked out of his suburban foster home and moves in with his estranged older brother in Cork’s Northside.

CHRISTY celebrates the power of community through its honest and warm-hearted depiction of finding tribe and a family, and provides a hopeful, humorous and inclusive snapshot of Irelands contemporary youth: a story that champions universal themes of a search for identity and belonging.

Winner of The Grand Prix at this year’s Berlin International Film Festival, as well as Best Irish Film at the Galway Film Fleadh, Christy is a punchy drama not to be missed.
