Believe it or not, black magic exists...

In Southeast Asia, the region is no stranger to myths, folklore, and black magic, with many films exploring the eerie, unseen forces that bridge the natural world with the supernatural.

One of these films is Director 張吉安 Chong Keat Aun’s THE STORY OF SOUTHERN ISLET, which will be screening at SFS Somerset! Director Chong will also be present virtually for a post-screening Q&A

Don’t miss his feature debut that got him BEST NEW DIRECTOR at the Golden Horse Awards and FIPRESCI Prize at the Hong Kong International Film Festival.

This September, we celebrate with more than just movies.

Nigel, our talented MINDS Craft trainee, has an eye for the little details that make each person distinctive, bringing them to life in his own style.

Catch him drawing live caricatures at MINDS Film Festival (MFF) on 19 & 26 September (limited time slots available), and take home a portrait of your own.

It’s one of the many ways MFF celebrates the talents, interests and aspirations of Persons with Intellectual Disability, both on screen and beyond it.

Come for the films, and stay for everything happening around them.

🎟️ Free admission. Reserve your seats at mindsfilmfest.com

This programme brings a selection of four short films from Ars Electronica Animation Festival 2025 to Singapore.

Austrian Panorama highlights recent animation works by Austrian artists or artists who live and work in Austria. The selection starts with an experimental AI-driven animation reimagining the dark, melancholic art of Upper Austrian artist Klemens Brosch. The second work, titled Limen by Stefan Krische is a meditation on our powerlessness and despair as society faces rising xenophobia, and the uncritical spread of propaganda through media. Seedless Fruits by Stefanie Schwarzwimmer also addresses societal issues, but in a more satirical tone. It takes us on a journey through a disintegrating corporate headquarters, critiquing neoliberal office culture and the alienation of labor in a system driven solely by profit. Last, but not least, Dagmar Schürrer’s film explores the deep interconnectivity between organic and non-organic beings, digital and analog, human and technology, nature and culture—inviting us to rethink individuality in our increasingly hybrid world.

A father in a bad wig turns up at his daughter’s office 🦷

Winfried is a retired music teacher who cannot stop playing practical jokes. His daughter Ines is a management consultant in Bucharest, working long hours on a job she cannot afford to lose. He decides she has forgotten how to be happy, so he invents a character called Toni Erdmann, puts in a set of fake teeth, and refuses to leave her alone.
It sounds like a comedy, and it is very funny. It is also one of the most honest films ever made about a parent and a grown child who love each other and have no idea how to talk.

Peter Simonischek, one of Austria’s great stage actors, plays the father. Sandra Hüller plays Ines. Both won European Film Awards for it, in a year when the film also took Best Film, Best Director and Best Screenplay.

Ten years on, people still talk about the birthday party scene. If you know, you know. If you don’t, do not look it up.

HKFGP 2026 closes with a film about family, luck, and the movies themselves.

THE SNOWBALL ON A SUNNY DAY《金多宝》follows Sunnie, an aspiring filmmaker working as a script supervisor on a chaotic set, who has bought her grandmother's same set of Mark Six lucky numbers every draw for over a decade. Then comes the Lunar New Year draw she forgets to place. The numbers win the jackpot. Rather than break her grandmother's heart, Sunnie borrows a villa from a colleague, a place that is really a film set, and tells everyone she bought it with the winnings. Her whole family moves in.

Written and directed by Philip Yung, a radical turn from the gritty crime dramas he is known for in PORT OF CALL and PAPA, and a genuine love letter to Hong Kong cinema. Starring Elaine Jin, Chung Suet Ying, Edan Lui and Michael Hui.
