Invisible People : Butoh, Death, and What Remains
“Move slowly, and when the movement starts to feel automatic, stop. Feel again.”
A line from Invisible People may be the best doorway into Alisa Berger’s documentary, a film that does not attempt to explain “what Butoh is.” Instead, it invites us to experience this form of movement that emerged in postwar Japan through bodies suspended somewhere between rebellion, eroticism, trance, ritual, prayer, memory, and death.
Berger lived in Tokyo from 2018 to 2022, where she immersed herself in the study of Butoh. Over time, she began documenting dancers and masters from different generations, with Yosh*to Ohno - son of Kazuo Ohno, one of Butoh’s pioneering figures - at the heart of the film. Yosh*to passed away during production, and the film gradually shifts away from being simply a documentary about dance toward something concerned with fathers, memory, loss, and the traces that remain after a body disappears. Reflecting on what she discovered while making the film, Berger has said, “The intensity does not come directly from Butoh, but from life itself.” That intensity then flows into art - and for Berger, Butoh is one of its most honest forms.
What makes Invisible People particularly compelling is that Berger does not remain outside this world as an observer. She appears and dances in the film herself. The film gradually begins to behave like Butoh - through appearance and disappearance, 16mm images, observation, staging, chance encounters, and fragments of memory. Berger describes its hybrid form as “a collage of staging, observation, fragments and memory.” What begins as a film about dance therefore opens onto a larger question: how do we preserve the presence of someone when all that remains are images, bodies, memories, and those who are still alive?
Alisa Berger has not one but two films in competition at WTD! 2026 this year. Invisible People is part of the International Competition, while her short film RAPTURE I - VISIT is selected for the Short Awards Selection. The latter follows Marko, a Ukrainian Vogue dancer, as he returns to his apartment in Donbas - a home he can no longer physically return to because of the war - through a digitally reconstructed space created with 3D photogrammetry and VR. It becomes a form of digital homecoming that is at once healing and confrontational, forcing him to face what has been lost. If Invisible People uses the body to explore what cannot be seen, RAPTURE I – VISIT uses technology to reach toward a place that can no longer be physically accessed.
Festivals and Awards:
Invisible People — Prix Studio Collector Award · Prix Galerie Analix Forever Award · CPH:DOX · Hot Docs · Sicilia Q***r Filmfest · DocPoint Tallinn · Cinedans FEST, Eye Filmmuseum · Best Experimental Feature Film, Istanbul International Experimental Film Festival · Special Mention, Festival Ambert Ciné-Arts
RAPTURE I – VISIT has travelled to Berlinale Forum Expanded · IDFA DocLab – Immersive Non-Fiction Competition · Thessaloniki Documentary Festival · One World International Human Rights Film Festival · EMAF · Rencontres Internationales Paris/Berlin, among many others.
Seeing two works by Berger at WTD! in the same year offers a rare opportunity to encounter the world of a single filmmaker from two very different directions — one searching for what is hidden within the body, the other attempting to return to a home that now survives only in memory and virtual space.
