Coming soon: MATRIX 290 / Keka Enriquez: "History Painting" 🎨✨

Opening December 2, this exhibition marks the first solo museum presentation in the United States of Filipino American artist Keka Enriquez, whose bold, expressive paintings explore the stories and people often left out of traditional accounts of American history.

After nearly twenty years away from painting, Enriquez returned to the canvas in 2023, developing a vibrant practice defined by energetic brushwork, vivid colors, and densely layered compositions. For this exhibition, she has created eight new paintings—the largest and most ambitious works of her career—drawing on histories ranging from Black cowboys and Mexican vaqueros on the Western frontier to the first Filipino settlement in St. Malo, Louisiana.

Reworking the conventions of American history painting, Enriquez blends abstraction and recognizable imagery to challenge whose stories are centered and how history is told. The 290th installment of BAMPFA’s long-running MATRIX series, "History Painting" will be on view December 2, 2026–April 25, 2027.

Thu / Oct 29 / 7PM: Celluloid Frontiers: A MISSING CAN OF FILM and STOP GENOCIDE. 🎬✨

In conjunction with the BAMPFA exhibition "Private Frontiers: Media Legacies of the Cold War," join us for Naeem Mohaiemen’s A MISSING CAN OF FILM (2025), a film exploring the contested histories surrounding Zahir Raihan’s STOP GENOCIDE (1971), created during the Bangladesh Liberation War.

Combining scenes from Raihan’s film with footage shot at the Bangladesh Film Development Corporation following the 2024 July Student “Monsoon” Uprising, Mohaiemen examines the film canister as a vessel of political memory, lost histories, and struggles over how the past is preserved and understood.

Following the screening, Mohaiemen joins BAMPFA Assistant Curator Tausif Noor for a conversation.

Co-sponsored by UC Berkeley’s Institute for South Asia Studies, Chowdhury Center for Bangladesh Studies, and South Asia Art Initiative.

A key figure in American experimental cinema from the 1970s until her untimely death in 1994, Keller brought a feminist perspective to personal, handmade filmmaking, expanding on the approaches of filmmaker Stan Brakhage.

Moving between social and political critique and intimate portraits of the people around her, Keller’s films are distinguished by their intricate visual and sound editing, poetic sensibility, and attention to gesture. Her work invites viewers to find new ways of seeing everyday life and the relationships that shape it.

The program will be introduced by Steve Anker, a longtime experimental film curator, teacher, and author, and a contributor to the new anthology "In the Absence of Marjorie Keller" 🎞️

Starting October 31: "The Cinema of Masaki Kobayashi: Midcareer Masterworks" 🎬✨

Known for his uncompromising challenge to entrenched power, Japanese filmmaker Masaki Kobayashi (1916–1996) created some of the most striking and politically incisive films in cinema history.

Following the international success of his antiwar epic THE HUMAN CONDITION, Kobayashi shifted from social realism toward the stylized beauty of traditional Japanese aesthetics, producing acclaimed works including HARAKIRI (1962), KWAIDAN (1964), and SAMURAI REBELLION (1967). Featuring scores by legendary composer Toru Takemitsu, these films explore power, resistance, and the consequences of challenging authority.

Now open: “Campus Collaborations / Private Frontiers: Media Legacies of the Cold War”

Bringing together new and recent photography, video, and installation by Naeem Mohaiemen, Prajakta Potnis, TJ Shin, and Tiffany Sia, this exhibition looks at the ways media, culture, and politics have shaped one another—from television broadcasts and pop songs to international magazines and photographs. Moving beyond traditional accounts of the Cold War as a contest between the United States and Soviet Union, “Private Frontiers” considers the period through the lens of decolonization and liberation movements across Asia and around the world. The artists examine how culture was used to shape perceptions and political narratives, while also creating connections and solidarities across borders.

Private Frontiers: Media Legacies of the Cold War is organized by BAMPFA and curated by Tausif Noor, Assistant Curator, and Atreyee Gupta, Associate Professor in the Department of History of Art at UC Berkeley.

Take a look at "Campus Collaborations / Lotty Rosenfeld: Disobedient Spaces" ✨

On view at BAMPFA through November 15, this landmark exhibition presents the first US retrospective of Chilean artist Lotty Rosenfeld (1943–2020), whose feminist practice used printmaking, collage, video, and site-specific installation to challenge systems of power. Created amid the repression of Chile’s Pinochet dictatorship, Rosenfeld’s work explores creative resistance, feminist care, and solidarity across differences. Her collaborations with artists and activists show how art can challenge dominant systems and open up new possibilities for collective action. 🖼️

"Lotty Rosenfeld: Disobedient Spaces" originated at the Miriam and Ira D. Wallach Art Gallery, Columbia University, with support from Teiger Foundation and the collaboration of the Fundación Lotty Rosenfeld. The exhibition is cocurated by Natalia Brizuela, Professor of Film & Media and Spanish & Portuguese, UC Berkeley, and Julia Bryan-Wilson, Professor of Art History and Archaeology, Columbia University. The presentation at BAMPFA is organized by Anthony Graham, Senior Curator.

SHAIHU UMAR screens at BAMPFA on Sunday, October 18 at 3 PM 🎬✨

Long thought to be lost, Adamu Halilu’s important work of Nigerian cinema was rediscovered in 2016, when negatives and prints were found in the archive of the Nigerian Film Corporation. Restored by Berlin’s Arsenal Filminstitut, the film was presented at the 2018 Berlinale Forum / Forum Expanded.

Set in northern Nigeria at the end of the nineteenth century, Shaihu Umar follows a respected Islamic scholar who recounts his life story to a group of students, reflecting on the trials and tribulations he endured, including enslavement. The film is based on the novella by Abubakar Tafawa Balewa, who later became the first prime minister of independent Nigeria.

Artist Steffani Jemison and choreographer Leslie Cuyjet come together for a collaborative performance reflecting on the dynamic artistic relationship between Hassinger and Nengudi. Through improvised text, dance, and thread, Jemison and Cuyjet perform alongside projections of archival images documenting Hassinger and Nengudi’s collaborations. The performance considers the intimacy and attunement of longstanding artistic partnerships, honoring the powerful intergenerational legacy of their work. 🧵

BAMPFA welcomes Stefanie Schulte Strathaus from Berlin for a week of special presentations and talks exploring the many facets of her curatorial work and the evolving role of film archives. Artistic Director of Berlin’s Arsenal Filminstitut, Schulte Strathaus has helped develop and nurture projects including the Berlinale’s Forum and Forum Expanded, Arsenal’s Living Archive, and the biennial Archival Assembly. She will also share recent restoration projects from film archives in Germany, Egypt, and Nigeria.

The series includes the annual free Mosse Lecture on October 16, celebrating Schulte Strathaus’s visionary curatorial work and leadership within the international film community. Tickets available at the admissions desk beginning at 2:30 PM. 🎞️

We're thrilled to feature artist Judith Scott in “Some Particular Heaven: Ideas of Utopia in the BAMPFA Collection” 🧶✨

Scott’s "Untitled" (2002) reflects the distinctive fiber practice she developed at Creative Growth Art Center where she worked from 1987 until her death in 2005.

Born in 1943, Scott spent much of her early life in state institutions before moving to California in 1985. Scott, who had Down syndrome and was Deaf, began attending Creative Growth in Oakland in 1987, where a visiting artist workshop introduced her to fiber art—a medium that became central to her practice and led to international recognition. Scott created nearly 100 wrapped sculptures during her time at Creative Growth, using discarded and found materials to build hand-formed armatures that she then enveloped in layers of fiber, often concealing an inner structure or collection of objects. No two sculptures repeat the same form or color scheme, reflecting the independence and self-direction that defined her practice. 🧵

Scott’s work is currently on view at BAMPFA as part of “Some Particular Heaven: Ideas of Utopia in the BAMPFA Collection” until July 11, 2027. Learn more at bampfa.org/utopia.
