Marlene Glaser

Marlene Glaser I am a hairstylist, makeup artist and colorist. I am a cosmetologist. Yep, that’s my official title but I became a cosmetologist in a bit of a roundabout way.

I went to Birmingham-Southern College because that was what the child of a faculty member was supposed to do. My mother was a voice teacher there but was an opera singer and a wonderful performer, so really, as the child of a “drama queen” and performer, who could blame me for falling in love with the dramatics and the chameleon-like opportunities that make-up and hair provide. It simply came natu

rally to me. Every time my mother bought me a doll, the doll got a mighty transformation, usually a Farrah Fawcett shag and some serious blue eyeshadow. I loved my time in college but deep down I always knew I wanted to have a career in hair and make-up, so being an art major was the closest thing that B-SC could offer me. Once I had taken all the classes that interested me, I finally confessed to my mother that I really, really wanted to do hair and make-up, and my mother, being a woman who had done her hair every color of the rainbow that was remotely acceptable in the USA, was agreeable. So off I went. I hit cosmetology school. I always knew that I wanted to do hair and make-up for movies, film, video, photography, and whatever else this world had to offer. I found the one woman in this whole town (at the time) who did that, I went to her and begged for a job. She was on a movie set when I graduated so I waited until her movie had finished production and began a short apprenticeship with her and continued to work in her salon for the following 9 years. I loved it. Even after a few detours in location, I still do. I have been so lucky as to have had my name run across the screen at Sundance, I have had my work published on the front cover of a national magazine, and I have done the make-up and hair of a few celebrities. I found great joy in that, however, I realized I find far more joy in creating relationships with my clients in the salon that I see regularly. I have always said “Trust me, I don’t LONG to run my fingers through your hair. I just enjoy knowing YOU.” I truly do. I love building relationships with my clients. I love knowing that every few weeks I will be able to catch up with what has happened in the lives of people I genuinely care for. I love having done this job long enough that I have begun to do three generations in one family. I love having someone come sit in my chair and receive a service and leave feeling better. How wonderful a job is that? I make people feel better about themselves. What more could I ask for in life?

“I actually spoke to women.”

02/04/2026

Hi there, beautiful people! Oh, how I have missed you! I want to thank you again for your patience, kindness, prayers, delicious food, gifts, etc... Dave and I both appreciate everything you guys did to make this experience as easy as possible. I found out that I know some really good cooks! Truly, I felt wrapped in lots of love and I couldn't be more grateful for that. I also wanted to let you know that I got many texts from my stylist friends who took care of some of you. Every text was some version of "Oh my god, I love _________. They are so sweet/interesting/funny!" I already know how amazing my clients are but it was pretty fun hear how dazzled my friends are by you guys.

I admit I am a little nervous coming back to work no matter how ready I am to catch up with each of you! As I said in my first email, part of my recovery is that I am restricted from bending, lifting, or twisting. After my first check up I was cleared to lift 20 pounds and according to the Googles, the human head weighs 10-12 pounds to I'm ready to lift your noggins with no fear! The bending/twisting part is a little trickier. I have my next check up in March and hopefully I will be cleared to do a little bending and twisting. For those of you who are ok with a dry haircut or are willing to come in with freshly shampooed hair, that can definitely help minimize my time at the shampoo bowl (which is where most of the twisting happens.) If you are getting highlights I might get in your space a little more than usual or you may have foils hanging in your face for a bit while I figure out how to foil with as little leaning forward as possible. I feel quite certain I can figure out how to do my job without risking my freshly fused spine.

According to my handy dandy Apple Watch, I am up to the same step count I was before surgery so that is wonderful. The one thing I haven't done is stand for hours on end and this is where I am going to ask for a little patience. If I feel like I need to stop and rest, I am going to. If my body tells me I'm standing too long one day, I will cancel and go home and rest. I know that is incredibly inconvenient for you, my dearest clients, but I have to put the oxygen mask on myself, so to speak. I really don't want to have a failed surgery and have to do it again. I know that doesn't give you a lot of confidence in making an appointment right now but for those who do I promise I will do my best to take care of you while taking care of me!

I truly can't wait to see each of your faces and catch up on the last 6 weeks! And thank you again for all you did for me while I was out. I really am so incredbly lucky to have y'all in my life!

Much love,
Marlene

Important News from Marlene

I'm sorry to email again but I fear many of you did not receive my email.

Many of you know I've been struggling with my back and the best solution at this point is surgery. I will be having a fusion on December 19th which means I'm really making it tough on your hair (and you) for the holidays and the beginning of the year. It isn't ideal but it's the best thing I can do for myself. I will be out of the salon from December 18th until February 4th. Of course I am hoping to be back as soon as I can but I am not going to jeopardize my fancy, newly bedazzled spine. There's always a chance it will take me longer to recover but I'm definitely an optimist when it comes to my ability to recover. When I come back I will be dipping my toe in with dry haircuts (no twisting and bending at the shampoo bowl.) Once I feel I can move on to the shampoo bowl then I'll be back in business but please understand that I might have to cancel on you last minute if I feel like I need to rest so consider February and March appointments to be slightly tentative. If you've already made appointments during the time I am taking off I cannot apologize enough for leaving you high and dry but I promise, it's a necessity. My sweet co-workers, Maryjane and Angie, can definitely tackle your grey roots and my former co-worker Allen Harrell has also been willing to step in to help if you need a men's or women's haircut or color. I will make sure I give you their info at the bottom of this email.

Many of you have asked if there is something you can do or how you can help and let me just say I'm honestly still amazed at how lucky I am to have such kind and amazing people in my life and in my chair (and it has been way too long since I told all of you that!). Some folks have been dropping off things at work and that is just fine! We have a freezer and Dave can make pickups. We will also never turn down DoorDash, GrubHub or UberEats credit. I've also decided to do what I did during the pandemic to help supplement my time off and offer gift certificates which can be purchased through Square (I'll share that link, too) or Venmo or you can pre-tip me for future services. There will be one caveat to the gift certificates and that is that they cannot be used until April. It might take me a bit to officially and literally get back on my feet and I'll need to be doing a little financial catch-up for a couple of months or so and every dollar will count. I hope that makes sense. I found out the hard way during the pandemic that selling gift certificates helps so very much in the moment but then you go back to work and make no money! (I'm pretty sure we all know that I do NOT have a mind for business but I do have a wealth of Netflix recommendations so hey, there's that! I'm good fer sumthin'!)

I really do feel terrible for doing this at the busiest time of year and I will miss each and every one of you and our fun conversations! I'm probably going to drive Dave and the animals insane by talking their ears off. Then again, I actually already do that to them. Truly though, I really will miss
all of you terribly. I'm not going to lie and say that I don't need a vacay but this isn't exactly the kind of vacay I wanted but this will mean I'll feel so much better and will be in a much better mood at work! I'm sure my clients and co-workers alike will be pleased and you never know, once I feel like myself again I might dance behind the chair while we talk. 'Cause that wouldn't be awkward at all.

Thank you, thank you, thank you, for being the best people on the planet. I really have neglected you all by not telling you lately how much you mean to me. Even when I'm in the foulest of the foul moods, you guys always manage to shake me out of it. And if you don't believe how much you mean to me, just ask Dave. Every day when I come home he asks "Who'd we see today?" And he asks with genuine interest because in some ways he feels like he knows all of you, just like you feel like you know him. (But don't worry, my room is still the vault of secrets-- he just gets to hear the fun daily stuff.) I truly do look forward to being the best me again so I can be the best me for each of you. And be sure and take notes of what fun stuff has happened so you can fill me in when I get back!

Much love to all of you,

Marlene

P.S. I hate Vagaro as much as you do. They bought Schedulicity so I swear it isn't my fault!

Important News from Marlene

Hello there, my friends. I know it has been a long time since I sent a long, rambling, email so I guess it's your lucky day! I'm here to ramble! I think the last time I waxed rhapsodic to you was during the pandemic. So much has changed since then, hasn't it? I'm definitely feeling older (aka decrepit) which brings me to the reason for this this email.

Many of you know I've been struggling with my back and the best solution at this point is surgery. So far there have been discussions of a food chain at some point which might run out of the salon and lord knows, Dave will be too busy listening to me whine as well as taking care of me and 5 animals to cook for us. We will also never turn down DoorDash, GrubHub or UberEats credit. As you can also imagine, this is going to have a financial impact as a self-employed person. I've decided to do what I did during the pandemic to help supplement my time off and offer gift certificates which can be purchased through Square (I'll share that link, too) or Venmo or you can pre-tip me for future services.
