Cinema Classics Seminar: SABOTEUR (1942)

Tuesday, June 23, 2026, 6:30 pm to 9:30 pm
Instructor: Erich Hertz, Ph.D., Siena University

Often considered Alfred Hitchcock’s first truly American film, SABOTEUR (1942) extends his early Hollywood turn toward larger set pieces and asks what it might mean to be “American” just months after the attack on Pearl Harbor.

Our seminar will explore how these pressures organize the film’s concerns, with special focus on the instability of innocence under wartime conditions and the reshaping of public life through suspicion.

We will consider how Hitchcock uses iconic American spaces to both align with and unsettle expectations, producing suspense that turns less on the enemy’s visibility than on the fragility of trust.

Cinema Classics Seminar: LAWRENCE OF ARABIA (1962) 🐫

Saturday June 20, 2026, 12:30 pm to 5:30 pm
Instructor: Paul Wright, Ph.D., Main Line Classical Academy

Hailed by Scorsese, Spielberg, Kurosawa, and others as the definitive cinema epic, LAWRENCE OF ARABIA (1962) continues to cast its spell sixty-four years later. Peter O’Toole is magnetic as the enigmatic and often controversial historical figure, T.E. Lawrence, turning in one of the most captivating early-career performances in film history.

The film would claim seven Oscars in total, including Best Picture, for Lean as director, and for Maurice Jarre’s unforgettable score. LAWRENCE OF ARABIA warrants big-screen viewing as well as the rich examination and discussion of a class setting. In this seminar, we’ll do both.

BACKROOMS (2026)

Starts Friday, May 29!

When her patient (Chiwetel Ejiofor) vanishes, a therapist (Renate Reinsve) decides to investigate the last story he told, about a doorway in the basement of a furniture store leading to a strange, seemingly endless space.

Recalling SEVERENCE, THE BLAIR WITCH PROJECT and HOUSE OF LEAVES, this eerie thriller is inspired by the online video series.

Director Joe Amodei and Flyers legends/Stanley Cup-winners Joe Watson and Jim Watson will join us for a post-screening conversation, moderated by author Sam Carchidi (BULLIES, IF THESE WALLS COULD TALK).

YOJIMBO (1961) on 35mm!
BMFI 100

Wednesday, June 17, 7:00 pm

“I’ll get paid for killing and this town is full of people who deserve to die.” In the most popular of his films in Japan, Kurosawa incorporated elements of the western, film noir, and dark comedy to tell the tale of a masterless samurai (Toshiro Mifune) playing both sides of a low-rent gang war.

The feature will be preceded by a special preshow, featuring era-appropriate cartoons, newsreels, and more.

This screening will be introduced by Jacob Mazer, BMFI Director of Programs and Education.

NORTH BY NORTHWEST (1959)
On 70mm

June 12–14

Roger Thornhill (Cary Grant) is an ad man, not a spy—but try telling that to the mysterious cabal pursuing him across the country.

Screenwriter Ernest Lehman set out to write “the Hitchcock film to end all Hitchcock films,” and maybe he did—from its crop-duster chase to its Mount Rushmore climax, this espionage essential contains some of the director’s most legendary set pieces, originally shot in high-resolution, widescreen VistaVision.
