Carolina Theatre CLT

Carolina Theatre CLT Captivate audiences. Elevate conversation. Inspire action. A Theatre for you. Welcome to the official page of Carolina Theatre at Belk Place. Belk.

The Carolina Theatre was built in 1927 and was once a major performance venue for the Charlotte region, hosting such talent as Bob Hope, Katharine Hepburn and Elvis Presley. The theatre, once a jewel in Charlotte’s crown, has stood largely vacant since 1978. The Charlotte City Council entrusted Foundation For The Carolinas with ownership of the 36,000-square-foot historic Carolina Theatre. In June

2013, the City of Charlotte entered into a contract with the Foundation to renovate and restore the property. The theatre will be transformed into a unique civic gathering and convening space that will serve as a venue for lectures, symposia, town hall meetings and other forms of community engagement. As a secondary focus, the theatre will host arts & entertainment offerings such as film, comedy, and music. The Carolina Theatre and the Foundation’s headquarters facility will be conjoined to create one thriving hub for civic activities. The Carolina Theatre will be part of a broader collection of civic venues named Belk Place in honor of the families of Claudia Belk and the late John M. Belk, and Katherine Belk and the late Thomas M.

As we reflect on our first full year since reopening, we are proud to highlight the awards we’ve received for the restoration of this historic theatre! Thank you to all the talented workers who had a (literal) hand in bringing The Carolina back to life:

🏆 The 2026 City Builder Award at the Charlotte Center City Partners Vision Awards, recognizing projects that strengthen Charlotte through culture, connection and thoughtful development.

🏆 The Heavy Hitter: Top Civic Development Award from Charlotte Business Journal, celebrating impactful projects shaping the future of our city.

These honors belong to our entire community, our audiences, artists, partners, donors and neighbors who believed in this space from the very beginning. Thank you for making our first year such a meaningful success. We can’t wait to keep building something special together.

We’re also excited to continue supporting our community through our ticket donation program. If your nonprofit is interested in requesting donated tickets, we invite you to apply and share the joy of live performance with those you serve. Request tickets today at thecarolina.com! 🎟️
