FRIENDS OF TCM - Chattanooga / The Scenic City Cinephiles
The FRIENDS OF TCM - Chattanooga Chapter is designed to exist at the crossroads of classic movies and great cinema.
The group began as an initiative of THE CHATTANOOGA SE TN FILM COMMISSION and HERITAGE HOUSE ARTS & CIVIC CENTER when it debuted THE BACKLOT: A PLACE FOR FILMMAKERS in February of 2013. The Heritage House served (and continues to serve) as a meeting place to connect indie filmmakers with local talent, resources, and crew.
The FRIENDS OF TCM (aka: THE SCENIC CITY CINEPHILES) currently sponsors the GOLDEN AGE OF HOLLYWOOD FILM SERIES -- composed of three to four monthly film screenings at Heritage House Arts & Civic Center in East Brainerd, as well as regular attendance at the monthly FATHOM/TCM screenings at the REGAL HAMILTON PLACE 8.
Here’s a ‘full breakdown’ of the classic film screenings offered at Heritage House:
3RD Thursday of the month at 2PM & 7PM (‘Classic Night’) -- a screening of a classic American film featuring movies from the silent era to the beginnings of the Hollywood Renaissance in the mid/late-1960s.
Among the many films screened as part of the series have been: Charlie Chaplin’s THE GOLD RUSH (1925), Stanley Donen’s CHARADE (1963), and the recently restored Orson Welles Shakespeare epic CHIMES AT MIDNIGHT (aka: FALSTAFF, 1965).
Every 4TH Thursday of the month at 2PM & 7PM (‘International Night’) -- a screening of essential foreign fare featuring classic films from overseas. (With subtites, of course -- but don’t worry, we include sone excellent BRITISH FILMS in this category as well! Recent offerings have included a broad wash of international cinema: Jean-Luc Godard’s BREATHLESS (1960), Yasujiro Ozu’s LATE SPRING (aka: Banshun, 1949), G.W. Pabst’s PANDORA’S BOX (1929), and Jean Vigo’s L'ATALANTE (1934), just to name a few!
Every 3RD Monday of the month at 6pm (potluck dinner) / 7PM (screening) (‘Backlot Night’) -- A screening of an essential ‘film-study’ classic (THINK:
you’re not a filmmaker unless you’ve seen ____) accompanied by a film-lover/-makers mixer immediately beforehand. Screenings are usually followed by a short documentary or preceded by a presentation by a working film professional, when available.
‘Downstairs activities’ during the upstairs screening include casting calls, script readings, and technology demonstrations.
