Finished the rough construction of the bed so it's usable for the camping trip Jazmine and I are going on at the end of this month! The joinery is based on the Gokstad bed design ( which I am adding the filligries later ), but with a rope bed design instead of the original slat method.

For modern comfort, a foam floor mat between us and the ropes, 2 foam mattresses with bedding on top of that

Well, had to redo my entire bed due to a design flaw and have until the end of August to get it done.

Going for a little more historically accurate design based on a bed found at the Gokstad burial site, but making it a rope bed as well.

Got a lot done today, but I couldn't have got as far as I did without Jazmine Marie John working side by side with her. She drilled a ton of holes needed for the bed side rails while I worked on cutting the square holes on the front bed posts. I am so grateful to have her in my Life. Not just as a work assistant, but also my Life companion and Love of my Life. We work together on many things, now we have another

🥰

Pictures to come in later posts!

PROJECT: ROPE BED

Drilling done and lattice set. Always have your "wrench and keys" handy to avoid the dreaded slack so you can "sleep tight"!

For those not familiar with a bed wrench and keys, the wrench is used to tighten the ropes to get all of the slack out and keys (carved pegs in second photo) hold the rope in place temporarily while you tighten everything up to create a more firm sleeping surface.

Hence, is where we get the term "sleep tight" when wishing someone a good night's rest 😉👍

PROJECT: REVAMP -"ROPE BED"

Ran out of time and energy before Beltaine to make the slat bed, so changing it into a rope bed now. Got the rope I need, and redoing the posts to a simple dado cut design where the side rails and head/ foot boards will set on place with a rope lattice holding it all together.

Phase 1: Head / Foot board roughed out 😉👍

PROJECT: "Bash out a Bed before Beltaine"

Hey folks! Long time no hear and see! I've had some health issues and hadn't really had the strength to get back into the shop, but I have set myself a challenge!

Just recently, I purchased a bell wedge tent for going to SCA camping events and now I need something to sleep on! My old 6 man dome tent is done and the air mattress is still good, but now I want to be off the ground. So now I am challenging myself to build this queen sized bed that will be mortise and tenon joined with just a dab of "puzzletry" 😉

The first of 4 posts, rough cut, all done by hand.

The side rails are going fit into the large slot all they way through where a matching hole will line up inside and the headboard / footboard will meet it and be helped by a pin on the outside locking everything together.

An inside shelf with slats across the inside will finish it. 😉🤘

Wish me luck in getting it all done before May 2nd!

PROJECT: REBUILDING WORKSHOP

Got myself a new toy for the shop to help speed things up (at least for sharpening), but still using hand tools.

Just with the 220 grit belt, I got a chisel polished to a mirror shine on the edge! 😁

PROJECT: REBUILDING THE WORKSHOP!

HELLO EVERYONE!!

My apologies for being quiet for so long, had a wonderful change in my world!

Last August , I moved into a new place with the love of my life Jazmine and it's taking us some time to get completely settled in AND the time to get things done. So I had a rare day off today and started gathering things I am needing for a new place to so my woodworking, starting with... tablespace!

This isn't finished just yet, still need the bracing for support, but you get the general idea. Perfect work height for me and lots of storage space potential below!

Getting ready to open the shop again and get back to my main projects!

Wow, it has been way too long since I have worked on my chair project. Had been kind of down for a long time about it. 4 tries on working on the back legs and not coming up with the correct centers to make the piece work.. 😑😮‍💨

I needed some inspiration to figure things out on how to get it right.

Didn't find the answers I was looking for until my friend Glenn Gorsuch put in his thoughts:

"Don't stop just because of failure. Keep at it and it eventually will happen"

That was the spark I needed to light that fire again..

Now, time to throw some kindling on this wood 😎👍

APPRENTICE PROJECT: MEROVINGIAN CHAIR

Finally got some time to work on this! Mentally exhausted and it's amazing what you can do when you have the right tools! Just needed a compass to scribe the diameter of the piece and then work it nearly down to diameter with a draw knife and then work it down on the lathe.

So much easier 😎👍

Woah! 235 followers! Sorry about posting new stuff! Life schedule is getting pretty hectic.

But here is an update on my Merovingian Chair project:

Once again, having to REDO the back leg as the whittling of the other went too deep and cannot make a straight piece of it long enough.

However, this other piece will be good for something else ;)

So if something in Life doesn't work or breaks, repurpose it for something else! ;)
