LEGEND OF THE MOUNTAIN is not just a three-hour, slow-burning ghost film that sounds like an exercise in arthouse endurance. It’s also funny, playful, romantic, strange, and occasionally completely ridiculous.

King Hu keeps breaking up the mist and supernatural dread with drunkenness, awkwardness and misunderstandings. Shih Chun, so controlled and heroic in DRAGON INN, is much more uncertain here, wandering into the mountains for what seems like a simple job and slowly realizing that everyone around him knows more than he does.

Yes, it’s three hours of beautiful, slow, meticulously composed images. But it’s also surprisingly easy to fall into. Once you’re in Hu’s world, the time moves differently.

The Song-dynasty ghost tale that inspired LEGEND OF THE MOUNTAIN, 《西山一窟鬼》 (One Den of Ghosts), begins not with terror, but with longing.

In the Chinese ghost-story tradition, the dead rarely return only to frighten. They return carrying what life could not resolve: love, longing, jealousy, regret, memory. The ghost is not simply an intrusion from another world, but an emotion that has outlived the body.

King Hu is less interested in pushing the ghost story forward than in letting it gather around you. Mist, mountains, silence, music and movement slowly take over, until the film becomes less a sequence of supernatural events than a mood you have entered.
