Launched in Feb. 2015 as a non-profit group by a collective of friends and film aficionados entrenched in the local arts scene, Second Screen Cult Cinema is an award-winning, curated monthly film series in the Tampa Bay area that has been presenting unconventional and unforgettable cult films geared towards adult movie-goers (18+) looking for a refreshingly unique cinematic experience. Though its

monthly in-person screening events are currently on hiatus to help prevent the spread of COVID-19, Second Screen recently launched an entertaining podcast series, which is currently available on iTunes, Spotify, and Podbean. Grab a drink and join film curators Ann-Eliza Musoke Taylor, Michael Martz, and Tyler Martinolich every second Thursday of the month for a deep dive into the glorious technicolor world of cult cinema.

𝐒𝐄𝐏𝐓. 𝟏𝟕: We’re officially steering into spooky season, and we’re kicking things off with an underrated gem that helped set the stage for the Japanese horror explosion of the late 1990s: 𝐂𝐔𝐑𝐄.

A hypnotic, slow-burn descent into psychological horror, 𝘊𝘶𝘳𝘦 follows Tokyo detective Kenichi Takabe (Kōji Yakusho) as he investigates a series of seemingly unrelated murders connected by one impossible detail: each killer has no clear explanation for why they did it.

Directed by Kiyoshi Kurosawa, this landmark cult classic transforms a police procedural into something far more unsettling, building an atmosphere of creeping dread around memory, identity, suggestion, and the terrifying possibility that violence may already be lurking just beneath the surface.

Released the same year as 𝘙𝘪𝘯𝘨𝘶, Kurosawa’s hypnotic nightmare takes a quieter, stranger, and far more unsettling path — and nearly 30 years later, we’d argue it remains the finest entry to emerge from the J-horror era.

𝐀𝐔𝐆. 𝟐𝟎: Paris has been photographed a million ways. 𝐀𝐌𝐄́𝐋𝐈𝐄 decided that wasn’t nearly enough.

Jean-Pierre Jeunet transforms Montmartre into a heightened, candy-colored dreamscape of cafés, cobblestone streets, tiny apartments, mysterious strangers, and impossibly photogenic moments. Through super-saturated color, whimsical camera movements, visual gags, and playful compositions, the city becomes less a location than a character in its own right.

It’s the Paris you might imagine after drinking way too much espresso, falling in love, and deciding reality could use a little more magic.

𝐀𝐔𝐆. 𝟐𝟎: Some movies make you want to change your life. 𝐀𝐌𝐄́𝐋𝐈𝐄 makes you want to pay closer attention to it.

Jean-Pierre Jeunet’s endlessly charming 2001 classic finds magic in the smallest things: skipping stones, cracking crème brûlée, returning a lost toy, overhearing a stranger’s conversation, or simply watching the world go by.

Amélie Poulain spends her days quietly improving the lives of the people around her, one tiny act of kindness at a time. And while her elaborate schemes don’t always go according to plan, the film’s central idea remains wonderfully simple: happiness isn’t always hiding somewhere far away; sometimes it’s sitting right in front of you.

Twenty-five years later, Amélie remains a joyful reminder to look for it.
