The Bible does not strictly forbid taking a loan or borrowing money, but it strongly discourages debt, warning that Proverbs 22:7, Romans 13:8, and Deuteronomy 28:12 describe the heavy burdens and spiritual dangers tied to owing others.Warnings Against BorrowingProverbs 22:7: "The rich rule over the poor, and the borrower is slave to the lender." (Shows how debt creates a loss of financial freedom and creates dependency.)Romans 13:8: "Owe no one anything, except to love each other." (Encourages settling financial obligations and avoiding unnecessary, lingering debt.)Psalm 37:21: "The wicked borrows and does not pay back, but the righteous is generous and gives." (Highlights the moral duty to repay what is borrowed if you do enter into debt.)Blessings of Avoiding DebtDeuteronomy 28:12: "The Lord will open the heavens... to bless all the work of your hands. You will lend to many nations, but you will not borrow." (Frames being free from needing loans as a sign of God's provision and blessing.)Deuteronomy 15:6: "For the Lord your God will bless you... you shall lend to many nations, but you shall not borrow."If you would like, I can share tips on how to budget or ways to pay off current debt using biblical stewardship principles.
