Hello gorgeous❤️

In a slightly altered universe we'd be celebrating the 104th Birthday of the RKO Hillstreet. LA's 2nd largest film house (2,916 seats) opened (without the RKO tag) at 8th and Hill on March 20, 1922 with an Orpheum vaudeville show and "Why Announce Your Marriage" on the big screen. Our recently updated page on the Hillstreet: https://losangelestheatres.blogspot.com/2018/10/hillstreet-theatre.html

The 1933 photo shows of what might have been opening night for "What Price Innocence?," a June release with Jean Parker, Betty Grable, Willard Mack and Minna Gombell. Note the lights on the sidewalk. With the feature you got the "Club Ebony R***e" and Horace Heidt's Californians as the band. Thanks to Ken McIntyre for locating the image for a Ken's Movie Page post: https://www.facebook.com/groups/429781353760576/posts/28964303073215023

This design by G. Albert Lansburgh was demolished in 1965. Two of his San Francisco theatres that opened the same year do survive: the Golden Gate (a near-twin to the Hillstreet, now a Broadway house) and the Warfield, right across the street (now a concert venue). Lansburgh's work in LA includes the Palace, El Capitan, Orpheum, Shrine Auditorium and Wiltern.
