Armenian can be heard in BACKROOMS, one of the biggest films of the year, Armenian Film Society can exclusively report.
Directed by 20-year-old filmmaker Kane Parsons, BACKROOMS is based on his viral web series about the mysterious "Backrooms," an endless labyrinth of eerie, interconnected rooms that exist beyond reality. The film follows a furniture store owner who discovers a secret doorway into the Backrooms, setting off a journey through a parallel world.
In several scenes, as two of the film's main characters, played by Chiwetel Ejiofor and Renate Reinsve, enter the Backrooms, a series of greetings in different languages can be heard, including Armenian.
The message is:
"Բոլոր անոնց որ կը գտնվին տիեզերքի միգամածութիւններեն անդին, ողջույններ"
("To all those who exist in the universe, greetings.")
The recording comes from the Voyager Golden Record, a time capsule launched aboard the Voyager 1 and Voyager 2 spacecraft in 1977. The Voyager Golden Record contains 55 greetings in different languages, selected by a team led by astronomer Dr. Carl Sagan to represent humanity to any extraterrestrial life, or future civilizations, that might one day encounter the probes.
Separately, the film's protagonist (Chiwetel Ejiofor) works at a fictional pirate-themed furniture store called Cap'n Clark's Ottoman Empire, although there does not seem to be any indication that its name carries any deeper historical meaning within the context of the film.
Produced for approximately $10 million, BACKROOMS has grossed more than $126 million worldwide since its release on May 29, 2026.
