Twas the Night Before RAGBRAI (Harlan Awaits)

’Twas the night before RAGBRAI, and all through the town,
Excitement was building; no spirits were down.
The banners were hung from each storefront with care,
To welcome the cyclists soon gathering there.

The volunteers worked with a smile on each face,
Putting the finishing touches all over the place.
The grills would be ready, the music would play,
As Harlan prepared for a memorable day.

The campers stood waiting, the streets were swept clean,
The town had been polished to sparkle and gleam.
The welcome signs proudly proclaimed with delight,
“Tomorrow, dear riders, you’ll roll in just right!”

The pie bakers smiled as they finished each crust,
Knowing that homemade is always a must.
The coffee was waiting, the sweet corn would steam,
And every last detail fulfilled a long dream.

The hills stood in silence, just waiting their turn,
With lessons in climbing each rider would learn.
Yet every hard mile would be worth all the while,
When Harlan would greet them with one great big smile.

For months we have planned, and we’ve counted each day,
Preparing to welcome the RAGBRAI way.
Tomorrow the wheels and the laughter begin,
As thousands of new friends come rolling right in.

So here’s to the riders still nearing our way,
We’ll welcome you warmly when dawn greets the day.
From all of us here in this proud Iowa town—
